By: Alex Kraskowsky, Rigo Barragán, John SalasSan Bernardino For CSUSB students and staff, daily commuting is the norm with most of the University’s students living off campus. Most of these commuters come from all over San Bernardino and Riverside counties from Montclair all the way to Rialto. Ever since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the decreased oil output from Russia and OPEC, there has been a massive surge in inflation and more importantly in gas prices. With the price per gallon now reaching upwards of $6.40 it has become increasingly harder for students to make their daily commutes to school. Combine this recent surge in prices with the average yearly income of a student; … [Read more...] about Students Feeling the Squeeze at The Pump

Rising gas prices means rising number of headaches for students
The gas light on the dashboard of the car turned a bright yellow. Alan Rodriguez was low on fuel but he dreaded going to the gas station. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), a member organization for drivers known by most for its roadside assistance, the average gas price in the United States 80 years ago was as low as 17 cents per gallon. Today, the average is over 2 and a half dollars. In the Inland Empire, however, the highest price for a regular gallon of gas is almost 70% more than the national average. As Rodriguez pulled up to the local Circle K, only a block from his house, his gaze landed on the bright signage, reading a whopping 3 dollars and 85 … [Read more...] about Rising gas prices means rising number of headaches for students
Oil tax for environmental health
By Jennifer Martinez |Staff Writer| President Barack Obama proposed a $10 per-barrel charge on oil, which will be addressed in his final budget request next week, according to CNBC.com. This new tax on oil would be gradually introduced over the next five years if it is approved by Congress. Oil companies will be responsible for paying these fees. “I think we will look back and say, “that was a smart investment,” said Obama during a news conference on Feb. 5. The main priority of this new oil charge is to reduce carbon emissions and the use of fossil fuels from the nation’s transportation system. About 30 percent of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions come from … [Read more...] about Oil tax for environmental health
Gas prices: Increasing or decreasing?
By Danni Ybarra |Staff Writer| “Get ready for $10 [per barrel of] oil” and a decrease in gas prices, according to Yahoo Financial. Yahoo Financial reports that the rise in U.S. oil production (due to hydraulic fracking and horizontal drilling) and output, as well as other factors such as more environmentally friendly cars, is lowering our demand for foreign oil and therefore putting a large strain on the global oil market and in turn lowering prices. These factors are what will likely help bring down the price per barrel to anywhere between $10 to $20, claims Yahoo Financial. However, some are not so convinced. Both NBC News and The Wall Street Journal report that gas … [Read more...] about Gas prices: Increasing or decreasing?

Gas prices up 83% since 2009
By Brenda Acuna |Staff Writer| Unless you drive a Prius, Southern Californians have a lot to complain about in terms of gas prices. With the average price of gasoline at $4.282 in the Inland Empire, the holes in my pockets keep getting deeper and deeper. As a daily driver and commuter to CSUSB, I drive roughly between 80-100 miles a day. I commute five days a week to school and I absolutely hate having to spend so much on gas. I drive a fuel efficient 2012 Honda Civic and I still have to fill up my gas tank every 3-4 days. According to a AAA report, gas prices have risen for 32 days straight, and show no signs of abating. There are plenty of news reports attributing the … [Read more...] about Gas prices up 83% since 2009

Avoid pain at the pump with a few simple steps
By Megan Davis |Staff Writer| Temperatures have begun to drop and everyone will soon be getting in the holiday spirit in anticipation of Halloween and Thanksgiving. One not so pleasant change however is the sky-high gas prices that seemed to erupt overnight. The Los Angeles Times reported that the rise of gas prices is due to the temporary power failure of Exxon Mobil Corp, a refinery in Torrance that did not resume production until Oct. 5. Another key refinery was forced to cut back on production when it experienced a major fire in August. High gas prices are of particular concern for many of our students that make the daily commute to campus. With the already enormous cost of … [Read more...] about Avoid pain at the pump with a few simple steps
Gas prices go through the roof
By Brenda Acuna |Staff Writer| The Commerce Department announced Sep. 28 that U.S. consumer spending has reached its highest mark in six months, thanks in large part to higher gas prices. According to the government report, consumer spending rose from 0.5 percent in August from July and had risen 0.4 percent in July, making it the largest jump since February. "The U.S. personal income and spending data for August are worse than the headline figures suggest and indicate that subdued jobs growth is hitting incomes," said Paul Dales, a senior economist with Capital Economics. The increase, "was largely due to extra spending caused by the surge in gasoline prices." Despite the … [Read more...] about Gas prices go through the roof
