Racking up a 9-ball victory
By Robert Klimper |Staff Writer| Pool players gathered in the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) to compete for a chance to claim victory and a $25 gift card on Feb. 1. Every other Wednesday, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. this quarter, student gamers compete in the 9-ball tournament held in Gamers Lounge. The tournament sets up its participants in a simple tournament style, where the winner of a best two out of three match moves up. Eventually two are left, and battle to see who is the champion for the week. Each quarter, the type of tournament is swapped. Smashing the competition
By Robert Klimper |Staff Writer| CSUSB gamers competed in a bi-weekly test of skills through a Super Smash Bros. tournament hosted by the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) on Jan. 25. The tournament is set up into a two bracket system. As matches are played the winner of each match are kept in the winners bracket and those who have lost get moved to the loser bracket. “It's kind of surreal for me [winning], I’m pretty happy,” said Ian Hicks, winner of the tournament. Anyone worried about losing in the first round will still have an opportunity to play again, as the winner of the winner bracket and the losers bracket have one final match to decide the winner. Yotes enjoy free game day on the last Tuesday of every month
By Yeana Kim |Staff Writer| Come and experience Free Game Day at the Gamers Lounge on the first Tuesday of every month. The Gamers Lounge is in the SMSU near the Coyote Café. There are several types of video games and board games available. It usually costs $1 per 15 minutes to play Xbox 360, Wii and billiards. Air hockey costs 25 cents per game and board games are always free. Students need to bring their Coyote OneCard for all checkouts. However, all games are free on Free Game Day. It is a great opportunity to take a break from the stress of tests and academic pressures. Super Smash Brothers invades the Gamers Lounge

The winner of the overall tournament was Luis Canas, who ended taking home the grand prize: a $50 Visa gift card. The atmosphere had the feel of a high-stakes basketball game. The suspense of someone winning a round was constantly building. Four players competed against each other in each round. It was double elimination for each round and every player had two lives. Midnight Madness calls gamers to duty
By Nigel Hamblin |Staff Writer| Millions of gamers logged online and played “Modern Warfare 3”(MW3) for the first time, including the students of CSUSB, Nov. 8 at midnight. The second annual Midnight Madness event was held at the Santos Manuel Student Union gamers’ lounge, giving students the opportunity to play the game for free at lunch, as well as providing refreshments, snacks, and a raffle for prizes. A moderate turn out and a relatively calm and quiet atmosphere made for a low-key event but a fun experience nonetheless.
