Upcoming Events

May 5, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Misty Williams |Staff Writer|   This week the Santos Manuel Student Union will be hosting a lot of events that tackle feminist, race and transgender issues head on.   On May 9 the SMSU women's resource center will host “Smashing the Patriarchy Feminist Bingo.”   Unlike ordinary bingo, the stereotypes of feminism will be discussed, specifically topics surrounding if women should shave their legs, if women need to cook, and why women get paid lower wages than men.   On May 10, there will be a screening of the film “Forgotten Heroes” by Delan Manongs.   The film will be surrounding the struggle that farmworkers had to go through to gain rights.   The film is based off of a … [Read more...] about Upcoming Events

What feminism really means

April 25, 2016 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Shirleena Racine Baggett |Staff Writer| I am a feminist. By making this declaration, I am saying that I believe and stand for the equal rights and representation for all, especially women. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, feminism is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities; it is the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. "Everyone benefits from feminism. We all have an obligation as human beings on this planet to advocate for equality," said Coordinator of the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) Janet Honn-Alex. Feminism—its movement, its culture, and its definition has evolved over time. In our society, feminism … [Read more...] about What feminism really means

“Mad Max: Fury Road” is not cinematic feminist “propaganda” drivel

May 31, 2015 by Kassandra Garcia Leave a Comment

By Kassandra Garcia |Staff Writer| Although Vanity Fair has hailed "Mad Max: Fury Road" as the most surprising feminist triumph, it is also viewed as "a feminist piece of propaganda posing as a guy flick" by some absurd men that go by the term “meninists” (members of the absurd men’s rights movement). If you're unfamiliar with the controversy surrounding the new Mad Max movie, here's a quick rundown: There are some men out there who actually fear that America is being feminized and that “real” men—men who are tough and totally secure in their masculinity—are being threatened by an ass-kicking half-bionic heroine who defies death to rescue five young women from sex slavery, according to … [Read more...] about “Mad Max: Fury Road” is not cinematic feminist “propaganda” drivel

By Rachel Molina | Staff Writer | Set in a post-apocalyptic world, water, food and oil have become scarce in the vast land of the Australian desert. "Mad Max: Fury Road," is a non-stop action and stunningly visual movie where we are introduced to the new "road warrior," Max Rockatansky. This film is directed by George Miller, who directed all of the original "Mad Max" films (1979,1981,1985), which starred Mel Gibson. Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) takes the lead as the new "Mad Max," a man of few words who is wild, relentless and a self-proclaimed loner that has lost his entire family. Social justice warriors not all bad

May 15, 2015 by Brittanie Gutierrez Leave a Comment

By Brittanie Gutierrez | Staff Writer | The average person pretends to know what they are talking about but in reality know only shallow surface points of the social issue or topic they are arguing. Cue the social justice warriors (SJW), those passionate social issue advocates who start blogs, webpages and petitions to persistently "enlighten" people who either do not care or do not know about certain social issues like feminism or abortion. Often times these individuals are ill-informed about the issues they are advocating or raising public awareness about. According to Urban Dictionary, a SJW is "an individual who repeatedly and vehemently engages in arguments of social … [Read more...] about Social justice warriors not all bad
