It was a surprise when Apple denied helping the FBI, but ultimately Apple made the best decision for their business. By Carolyn Solar |Staff Writer| In response to the San Bernardino mass shooting on Dec. 2, 2015, the FBI asked Apple to design a software that would allow them to gain access to the iPhones used by shooters Syed Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik. Apple is refusing to cooperate with the demands the court has ordered. With access to the phone, the FBI is hoping to find out whether others were involved in the attack. San Bernardino still in turmoil over bankruptcy

Following the notorious municipal bankruptcy protection filing of 2012, San Bernardino has failed to produce a successful audit of its 2012-13 fiscal year. In the face of a $45 million deficit, an increase in costs, and a downward spiral in revenues, San Bernardino filed for Chapter 9 in 2012. FBI tries to fight cellphone encryption

Apple and Google announced new software that would automatically make the contents of any cell phone private by using codes that the companies claim they won’t be able to unlock. This announcement came in the wake of last year’s National Security Agency (NSA) leak, in which Edward Snowden disclosed confidential documents about government agencies collecting information on Americans. No financial information was stolen but the personal information obtained may be used in scamming attempts. The cyber attack was revealed on Oct. 2 in a securities filing by JP Morgan Chase. The securities filing stated that approximately 76 million households and 7 million small businesses are impacted by the breach. Chase warned that personal information stolen in the attack may be used in phishing or scams targeted towards those affected.
