Deconstructing the Types

March 14, 2017 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Sierra Marrero | Assistant Community Editor Stereotypes—a method to categorize people, can not only used to diminish an individuals self worth but also causes a division from ones own culture. Whether it’s subconsciously or consciously, sociology research shows that we all use stereotypes. Stereotypes are not limited to just race, but are made within the contexts of gender, religion, class, sexuality, etc. As cliché as some people may think stereotypes are when discussing its relevance in society, many underestimate the power it truly holds on people. One riddle included in research conducted by Mikaela Wapman (CAS’14) and Deborah Belle, asked participants to solve this riddle: “A … [Read more...] about Deconstructing the Types

Racial Ambiguity

March 1, 2016 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Erendy Torres |Staff Writer| Have you ever been asked, "What are you?" Have you ever wondered about someone's mysterious ethnic background? There are times we cannot pinpoint someone's race by their physical appearance. We call this "racial ambiguity." "Someone that is racially ambiguous does not possess the stereotypical physical attributes of his or her supposed racial category. It is the physical features that one notices first about another individual when trying to determine that person’s racial identity," as defined by Cindy Veronica Vargas in the study, "What Are You? A Study Of Racial Ambiguity." "Skin color, hair texture, facial features are racial markers that … [Read more...] about Racial Ambiguity

Campus shows great diversity

October 11, 2014 by Archived posts 498 Comments

By Ivanna Carlos |Staff Writer| Diversity can lead to creativity and CSUSB has plenty of it. In today's environment, diversity plays a big part. According to the CSUSB website, our campus has the second highest African American and Hispanic enrollments of all public universities in California. "Having this much diversity on campus can bring good and also bad," said CSUSB student Lilian Gutierrez. "You can come across someone that doesn't speak the same language as you." Diversity may create barriers between people, causing difficulties in relationships. These obstacles may stem from subtleties of the same language and disputes in colloquialisms, not including interplay between … [Read more...] about Campus shows great diversity

Interracial dating is a good thing and should be more prominent on campus

February 15, 2013 by Archived posts 18 Comments

By Angelice Romero |Staff Writer| Apparently there are not as many interracial couples in the San Bernardino county and at CSUSB. I heard it was partially because people like to stick to their own, although San Bernardino is a racially diverse city. I think people should not rule out dating someone outside their race and everyone should try dating a different ethnicity at least once in their life. Sophomore Sandy Arevalo, feels that dating outside your race is interesting because she gets to learn a different culture. Sandy, who is Mexican-American is currently dating a Caucasian guy. The issue she originally had was the language barrier between her parents and her current … [Read more...] about Interracial dating is a good thing and should be more prominent on campus
