Learning about impostor syndrome from the summit for Social Justice

February 18, 2020 by Matt Santos 378 Comments

As a Cal State, not many political and social events or organizations are offered on campus, as compared to UCs. However, on Friday, February 7, students were given the opportunity to learn more about social justice at the Social Justice Summit, hosted by the Office of Student Engagement. The event started off with a light breakfast for all of the attendees. Attendees had muffins and coffee as they conversed with friends and networked with others before the event. Once it hit 10:00 a.m., attendees were invited to make their way to the Event Centers B and C for the opening speeches. The first to speak was Jacob Chacko, the Assistant Director of Diversity and Inclusion. Chacko set … [Read more...] about Learning about impostor syndrome from the summit for Social Justice

Sex talk ignites the university

May 20, 2017 by Arthur Medrano 163 Comments

By Arthur Medrano |Staff Writer| CSUSB hosts a night of sexual health and HIV education aimed to empower students about the issue. The event began with an introduction panel called Sex in the Dark, a time for students to address their concerns to experts while in a glow in the dark room. For students, this made it acceptable to shine their light in interest about reproductive health and safe sex that many might have anxiety to speak out. Topics like hook up culture, reaches out to how it has dehumanized people's sexual encounters and rather than being educated by their culture on this matter, they seek advice from resources the campus provides. Representatives from Planned … [Read more...] about Sex talk ignites the university

Women belong in the Resistance

January 26, 2017 by Brittanie Gutierrez 622 Comments

By Brittanie Gutierrez |Staff Writer| I have always been passionate about women's rights; I've always wanted to let people know that my rights were not for negotiation. I never imagined marching next to others with the same emotions, fears and hopes. So when Women's March Los Angeles was formulating, I knew I wanted to take part of it. Being a woman devastated and afraid of the future of my rights, I deemed it vital that I went to this march; it was not an option—I had to go. The morning of the march, I knew nothing but good things were going to happen. After the first stop on the Metrolink, I knew this movement was going to be big; the train had reached maximum capacity … [Read more...] about Women belong in the Resistance

Black women suffer media degradation

October 12, 2015 by Archived posts 117 Comments

By Cherae Hunt |Asst. News Editor| It disappoints me as a black woman to see myself portrayed in such a negative light in the media. Black women are seen as either sexual objects or perceived as "ghetto," even though there are plenty of women in power positions that don’t get recognized or represented. All students interviewed are black. "We want to give the appearance that we are living the good life because most songs out today say that if you aren’t drinking alcohol heavily, going to the club every weekend and sleeping with some stranger by the end of the night then your life is boring,” said student Destiny Hunter. All over television and rap music videos black women are … [Read more...] about Black women suffer media degradation

“Mad Max: Fury Road” is not cinematic feminist “propaganda” drivel

May 31, 2015 by Kassandra Garcia 6 Comments

By Kassandra Garcia |Staff Writer| Although Vanity Fair has hailed "Mad Max: Fury Road" as the most surprising feminist triumph, it is also viewed as "a feminist piece of propaganda posing as a guy flick" by some absurd men that go by the term “meninists” (members of the absurd men’s rights movement). If you're unfamiliar with the controversy surrounding the new Mad Max movie, here's a quick rundown: There are some men out there who actually fear that America is being feminized and that “real” men—men who are tough and totally secure in their masculinity—are being threatened by an ass-kicking half-bionic heroine who defies death to rescue five young women from sex slavery, according to … [Read more...] about “Mad Max: Fury Road” is not cinematic feminist “propaganda” drivel
