Q: How do you see this pandemic affecting our local economy? A: Through the Institute of Applied Research, we do a lot of different research and one of them is a monthly economic forecast. Cuba’s Transformation

June 9, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Jacob Strangis |Staff Writer| Cuba, once our enemy, can now be a place for American tourists to travel and for corporate interests to thrive. “Touristic Nostalgia in Tomorrow’s Cuba” was a one hour event held on May 16 in the Santos Manuel Student Union hosted by Dr. Kaifa Roland. The United States, along with other world super powers, have had very little influence on Cuba since it has been partly in isolation. The event was primarily discussing how will Cuba as a country change and evolve over the years and progress with potential of increased American tourism and imperialism. Even though it has been isolated to outside nations, Cuba holds a wide variety of culture within … [Read more...] about Cuba’s Transformation

Millennial Struggles

February 9, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

Maria de Lourdes Campos |Staff Writer| In today’s society there may be young adults whose lives have taken an unexpected turn. Things like children, living expenses, and education take a toll on them, both physically and mentally because there’s that daunting feeling of what if, what if I can’t do this? What if I bite off more than I can chew? The reality is that many young adults feel this sense of ineptness because they have goals and stressors pulling them in different directions, while trying to be active members of society. Eventually these stressors take a toll on them emotionally, physically, and mentally. As a result, many young adults find themselves living with their … [Read more...] about Millennial Struggles

Minimum wage: Good or bad

August 9, 2014 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Marlyn Rodriguez |Managing Editor| Raising minimum wage can be a controversial topic because while some may agree others will disagree and both with strong opposing opinions. Jeff Jacoby, a Boston Globe columnist stated, "When legislators raise the price of low- and unskilled labor, its usually low- and unskilled laborers who end up paying the price." The argument is that raising minimum wage will only cause a downward spiral to the people who support it most. Receiving a higher income for people who earn the minimum sounds like a dream come true. In reality, the people who are advocates of the cause are going to be the ones dealing with the consequences when they are … [Read more...] about Minimum wage: Good or bad

Study shows recent graduates struggle to pay off college loans

April 13, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Marlyn Rodriguez |Opinions Editor| American Student Assistance (ASA) believes that student debt might actually be hindering the economy instead of helping it. Many students take out loans, but aren’t making enough money after graduation to support themselves. This leads to a vicious cycle, and many students are unable to pay back their debt, according to ASA. ASA also reports that high debt directly correlates to a student’s ability to actively participate in the economy. Student debt delays their ability to purchase a car or a home, open a small business or even start a retirement savings. The Chronicle of Higher Education states that the amount of student loan debt is greater … [Read more...] about Study shows recent graduates struggle to pay off college loans

Plan to raise minimum wage

February 21, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Daniel DeMarco |Asst. Features Editor| President Barack Obama said Congress should finish the job he started by raising the minimum wage from the current federal minimum wage $7.25 to $10.10. “I make minimum wage and even $8 sucks, $7.25 would just be ridiculous. A nice raise would really help me out and I know I’m not the only one,” said student Ken Mitchell. Obama said that Americans deserve to know where the officials they elect stand, and if they oppose the wage increase then Americans should ask for reasons. “Obama is right. They need to let us know why they can’t agree on anything because this congress hasn’t done s*** for us,” said student Faye Davis. Not … [Read more...] about Plan to raise minimum wage

President’s address covers vital issues

January 31, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Courtney Mata |Staff Writer| President Barack Obama called for a wage increase, a removal of troops in the Middle East, and a reduction of foreign oil usage in his State of the Union address. Obama is trying to restore our nation’s trust because many Americans are discouraged by our previous year. Congress has yet to support Obama’s goals, according to Washington Post staff writers David Nakamura and David A. Fahrenthold. “Instead of pledging to fix the mess, the president was now promising to find ways around it, and change policies on his own authority,” said Nakamura and Fahrenthold in The Washington Post. “Obama returned to a familiar problem, Washington’s bitter and stalemated … [Read more...] about President’s address covers vital issues
