By Erika Aguilar |Staff Writer| 11/20 San Bernardino Police Seek Man Who Kidnapped Woman Police are investigating a carjacking and kidnapping of a woman that begun at the St. Bernardino's Medical Center parking lot. After finishing her shift at the medical center, the woman was approached by a man who was carrying a knife and forced her to get inside the car with him, according to authorities. The suspect then dropped off the woman at IHOP in Rancho Cucamonga with no injuries and police were able to find her car yet it is unclear weather the suspect was arrested. Conservation garden embraces drought
By Michael Isberto |Features Editor| CSUSB has joined the water conservation efforts by holding a water conservation garden workshop on May 19 and May 21 at the John M. Pfau Library. Water conservation is a widely discussed topic, especially as California is in the midst of a drought. There are many entities that sponsored the two-day event, including the Inland Empire Resource Conservation District, the city of San Bernardino Water Department, the CSUSB Water Resources Institute and the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District. Saving for a rainy day
By Kyle Richardson |Staff Writer| For the last four years, California has been in a severe drought. Recently, the State has taken action to reduce monthly water usage by 25 percent. This has slightly helped California’s drought, but there are other ways that Californians can help reduce water consumption. We should be more cautious in using water. "I do not really think about the amount of water I use, to be honest," said student Lian Raya. Ninety percent of the state remains in the drought, down from 97 percent two months ago, according to the United States Drought Monitor. Polluted groundwater threatens water resources

The region’s water pollution will become permanent in five to eight years and would have to be shut down, according to the study. Among water problems the California State Water Resources Board found high levels of toxic chemicals, including arsenic, thallium and nitrates in water supply wells near the wastewater disposal sites. “Arsenic and thallium are extremely dangerous chemicals. Water cuts erode farmers’ livelihood
By Cherae Hunt |Staff Writer| California is suffering through the worst drought in over 100 years and CSUSB is doing its part to deal with the water crisis. “We have been in multi-year droughts and extended dry periods a number of times in the past, and we will be in the future. In periods like this there will be shortages, of course, but the state as a whole is not going to run dry in a year or two years,” said Ted Thomas, a spokesman for the California Department of Water Resources according to Los Angeles Times. Besides he fire department, the San Bernardino Police Department (SBPD) has also taken a hit in the last few years. Approximately 50 officers leaving the department between 2013 and 2014. This increased the turnover rate to six percent, according to The San Bernardino Sun. The number of police officers leaving the SBPD since San Bernardino declared bankruptcy has nearly doubled, according to The San Bernardino Sun. In accordance with the increasing popularity of the green berry—yes, it is a fruit—the consumption rate in the United States is also increasing. “More than 80 percent of the avocados grown in the U.S. come from California,” according to slate.com, a daily online magazine. In order to produce one pound (about 454g) of avocados, 74 gallons (about 280L) of water is needed in the state. Water usage declines statewide
By Francisco Casillas |Staff Writer| Californians have finally cut back on water consumption, according to a new statistics report released by government officials Tuesday. According to the report released by the State Water Resources Control Board, overall state water usage shows a significant decline, cutting usage by 11.5 percent in August. This is equal to 27 billion gallons of savings, up from 11 billion saved in July. However, areas in the South Coast region have had a smaller decline, with only a 7.8 percent decrease last month. The drought is affecting the entire state of California, according to the U.S Drought Monitor. It is the first time in 15 years that there has been a shortage of water with this intensity. California has received an average of four inches of rain from the beginning of the year compared to the average of 20 inches, according to ThinkProgress.
