October is regarded as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the CSUSB community is doing their part to honor the cause. On October 3, an event sponsored by VOICE and Title IX and Gender Equity, “Put The Nail In It”, kick-started a campaign to promote ending domestic violence and celebrating survivors of abuse by having students paint one fingernail purple. Shared Stories combat Sexual and Domestic Violence
By Arthur Medrano |Staff Writer| "Stand up!" and "Fight back!" student chanted, as the event dedicated to breaking the silence affecting all genders and sexualities. The Women's Resource Center at CSUSB held their annual "Take Back the Night" event on Friday, April 21. A group of survivors came out one by one to speak out about their stories, telling the audience that they persevered and will continue to fight back. Each participant came from a different background and their stories unfolded emotions that struck every corner of the SMSU. Dating Violence Does Not Equal Love
By Sandy Rodriguez | Staff Writer | On campus, there have been 6 sexual assaults, 3 sexual harassments, 9 dating/domestic violence, and 3 stalking cases reported from July 6, 2015 to Oct. 15, 2015. Nineteen reported victims are women and two are men. Emotional, mental, verbal and social abuse are forms of abuse aside from physical. The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) held an event, Dating Violence Does Not Equal Love, that taught about the warning signs of dating violence. Indianapolis Colts player charged with rape
By Nathaniel Lastrapes |Staff Writer| Indianapolis Colts backup linebacker Josh McNary was arrested Wednesday, Jan. 14 for rape, criminal confinement, and battery resulting in bodily injury to a 29-year-old woman according to the Indianapolis Police Department. McNary, 26, took the woman back to his apartment after her shift at a local bar at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 30. The woman was, allegedly, physically assaulted and raped before she managed to escape the apartment with McNary's cell phone. Los Angeles King’s defenseman Slava Voynov was arrested last Monday Oct. 20 at 12:45 a.m. under suspicion of domestic violence against his girlfriend. Officers arrived at the Redondo Beach residence after a neighbor called the police saying, “a woman was screaming for the past 20 minutes and could now be heard crying,” according to a news release from the Redondo Beach Police Department. The new cause is an educational and a recovery tool for victims of domestic abuse and allows people who have suffered from brutality get to share their stories and reflect through art. The movement was first initiated in 1990 in Massachusetts and has become a thriving project to raise awareness for domestic violence. Clothesline project becomes outlet for students
By Ryan Libby |Staff Writer| Students express their stories of domestic violence by decorating t-shirts and The Clothesline Nearly 25 percent of women have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime. And nearly 74 percent of Americans personally know or have known someone who has been a victim of domestic violence, according to the Domestic Violence Resource Center.
