Incarceration costs vs. education costs

By Brenda Servin |Staff Writer| The economy is in poor shape and the growth of prison budgets is costing us tax money. According to Rollie William’s article on Upworthy.com, the United States prison population ranges from 2 to 3 million a year, which is 23.5 percent of the world’s incarcerated population and the average annual cost per inmate is $31,238. Think of all the money spent yearly on inmates and the fact that the money for the prison budget has to be taken from other government funded programs. CSUSB pitcher Cory Caruso looks to get drafted by MLB team

By Amy Cutillo |Staff Writer| With the Coyote baseball season over and less than a month left until the MLB Draft, left-handed ace Cory Caruso is waiting to see if he gets the call. Caruso, who is a senior, was drafted last year by the Florida [now Miami] Marlins, but with good reason he decided to turn down the offer. “I didn’t sign because I thought I needed to improve, and I wanted to come back even better this year,” said Caruso. Motown influences Black America

Pfau Library and Black Faculty, Staff and Student Association presented a lecture last Thursday, “Remembering Motown: The Politics of Sound and Performance.” According to the chair of theatre arts department and host Kathryn Erwin, the seminar covered how “Motown influenced popular culture and re-created the image of Black America.” The event was part of the Noontime Lecture Series held by the Pfau Library and took place Feb. 16 on the fourth floor. The original family business, Motown, is responsible for the fame of stars such as Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and Stevie Wonder.
