Civil rights prop 209 debate emerges

February 6, 2014 by Archived posts 110 Comments

By Essence Dennis |Staff Writer| Democrats are urging the public to reconsider and repeal certain aspects from Proposition 209, better known as the Civil Rights Proposition. The proposition deals with applicants for schools, jobs, and so forth having to state their sex, gender, age, ethnicity, and other types of personal information that could inevitably deter you from a particular college or job. Proposition 209 is set to, “prohibit against discrimination or preferential treatment by state and other public entities,” whether it be based on their race, sex, or ethnicity as stated by vote96.sos.ca.gov. Since the proposition was passed in 1996, attendance has decreased. “I was a … [Read more...] about Civil rights prop 209 debate emerges

Government back open for business

October 19, 2013 by Archived posts 129 Comments

By Daniel DeMarco |Staff Writer|           On Oct. 16, 2013, President Barack Obama signed a deal passed by Congress, ending the partial government shutdown. Cutting it very close, Obama officially signed the deal around 9:30 p.m. the night before the country lost its ability to continue borrowing money. The deal was originally negotiated by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Democrat leader for Nevada) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Republican leader for Kentucky). Both the Senate and the House of Representatives approved the plan. According to Aljazeera, the Senate passed the deal by 81 votes to 18 and the House passed it, … [Read more...] about Government back open for business

Obamacare leads to government shut down

October 5, 2013 by Archived posts 3 Comments

By Andy Quintana |Staff Writer|   The federal budget failed to pass early October, because the “Grand Old Party” wanted to defund Obamacare once again. Obamacare should not have been involved in the decision to pass the federal budget. Obamacare should have been a separate issue from the budget altogether. Republicans have made efforts to put a holt on Obamacare for a long time. As the time came for a new federal budget to be created GOP seized an opportunity to defund Obamacare through; fear that a federal budget would not be passed, leading to a government shutdown. USA Today explained, “the motivation House Republicans had in placing an amendment to defund … [Read more...] about Obamacare leads to government shut down

Make Puerto Rico the 51st state already, jeez

February 1, 2013 by Archived posts 323 Comments

By Angelice Romero |Staff Writer| It has been 61 years since Puerto Rico became a commonwealth of the United States, so why is it still not a state when it obviously should be? The answer is politics. Being Puerto Rican-American, I see firsthand the struggles Puerto Rico is going through and how becoming a state would benefit us. The education system in Puerto Rico is terrible and lacks major funding. According to The New York Times, riots started because of a 50 percent tuition increase of $800. This not only shows the struggles of the University of Puerto Rico campuses but it also represents the struggle of Puerto Rico and it’s people. The 2010 and 2012 census in Puerto Rico shows … [Read more...] about Make Puerto Rico the 51st state already, jeez

Less political advertising, please

November 13, 2012 by Archived posts

By Melissa O'Beck  |Staff Writer| Hats off to our former and now reelected President, Barack Obama. Your victory marks the end of the election year, and the relief to my intolerable agony. I’m sure I am not the first, and certainly will not be the last to say “Phew, the election is over.” It’s not that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy all 3,692 political Facebook post polluting my news-feed, or six automated phone calls a day informing me who to vote for while soaking up my data plan. Furthermore, it has never been so enjoyable tuning into prime time television and being bombarded with “this message has been approved by...” during every other commercial. However, I suppose I can say I … [Read more...] about Less political advertising, please

CSU budget tightens belt

May 17, 2011 by Archived posts 1,060 Comments

By Angelina Garibay |Staff Writer| The CSU system is being asked to tighten their belts once again in the midst of a budget that could potentially reduce state funding by a total of $1 billion. You can’t open a newspaper or go online without news of California’s budget crisis right in your face. The trouble with so much news is that we can get desensitized to the grave issues that are facing all of us university students throughout the state. It isn’t just the colleges that are suffering. K-12 schools throughout the state are expected to have their budgets sliced as well. Reducing the number of teachers per child will effect how many are prepared for college. The snowball keeps … [Read more...] about CSU budget tightens belt
