Cursing has become a social norm

 By Joshua Aguilar |Staff Writer| Cursing, swearing or cussing, no matter what you prefer to call it, is a part of our everyday lives. Imagine yourself in your crowded lecture hall, a cellphone goes off loudly followed by the voice of an apologetic student saying, "oh s—, my bad." You hear laughter from all around as you find other people laughing at the student's embarrassment. Cursing has become a social norm and it may be surprising to find someone who does not use profanity. Some people just use it to express their feeling, others just use it to overcome painful or nervous situations, and some people curse to look tough. I like to play online games with my friends, and when we play games together, there are many different situations. We laugh, have fun, become upset and swear at other users. By Julia Matulionis |Opinions Editor| The Marchex Institute, a Seattle based marketing group, performed a study using call mining technology to scan over 600,000 phone conversations for curse words. Surprisingly, New York didn’t top the list. It was Ohioans who were reported to use four letter words the most compared to the other 49 states.
