The CSUSB track and field team's season may be winding down, but the Coyotes are heating up as the CCAA Championship nears. Track and field joined the lineup of CSUSB sports in 2015. Cross country head coach Tom Burleson led the team for the first three seasons. This season, assistant coach Lauren Reimer was named the new head coach. Burleson remains the cross country coach but now also has the title of track and field assistant coach. For their first meet of the season, the Coyotes traveled to Claremont for the Rossi Relays on the campuses of the Claremont Mckenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps colleges. Track is back for third season
By Yera Nanan |Staff Writer| With the Rossi Relays less than three weeks away, the Track and Field team is looking to make their mark this season by coming out of the gate strong. This Division II athletic program is fairly new to CSUSB being just its third year, yet features some terrific athletes. Just last year, second year runner Sinclair Watson was one of the fastest freshmen in the conference, placing seventh in the 100 meter dash at the CCAA last year with a time of 12.48. Aceves represents CSUSB in track NCAA Championships
By Shanna Shernaman |Staff Writer| Track and field athlete Laura Aceves represented CSUSB in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Championship Prelims on May 26. The event took place at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. “I was a little bit nervous but it's normal,” said Aceves, “it was new ground for me, a new environment.” Earlier in the season, Aceves struggled through various medical problems that prevented her from being able to race. “I was happy that I made it to Nationals considering two months ago I was considering red-shirting,” said Aceves. Laura Aceves races into NCAA Championships

Aceves competed on May 14 at the All On the Line National Qualifier and Harry Marra Multis meet at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. “I wasn’t nervous,” said Aceves. “I was more focused on me,” continued Aceves. All sprints, relay and field events competed in prelims while all distance events went straight to finals. In the 3000-meter Steeplechase, Laura Aceves ran a new personal record (PR) of 10:37.54, earning herself a second place finish and a spot at Nationals. “I was excited and a little bit nervous but confident of myself,” said Aceves. “I knew I would have good competition that would help me to PR," continued Aceves. The day was hot, but the 'Yotes ran hard to get their last minute qualifying marks in. Field event prelims began on April 22. Finals for field and track events took place on April 23. In shot put, Coyote Simone Everett threw 10.54 meters, not far off of her personal record of 10.69. The 1500-meters was the first event on the track where team captain Patricia “Patty” Cortez ran a 4:39.97 in heat two, earning herself a second place finish. Track has success at Pomona-Pitzer Invitational
By Shanna Shernaman |Staff Writer| CSUSB Women’s Track and Field competed at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on March 9. It was a rainy day, but that didn’t stop the Coyotes from taking the field. The Coyotes had a successful day starting with the women’s 5000-meters “B” race, where athletes Cara Bonafede and Elizabeth “Lizard” Hernandez brought the Coyotes in with a great finish. Bonafede finished fifth with a Personal Record (PR) of 19:22 and Hernandez followed shortly behind in seventh with 19:34, beating her previous record by 51 seconds.
