Vox pop: How are CSUSB athletes staying in shape during the pandemic?

December 1, 2020 by Alyssa Beck 349 Comments

CSUSB student athletes tell us whether or not the pandemic has made it difficult for them to stay in shape.  Photos of the student athletes were provided by the CSUSB Athletics department. Justine Ziranda - Cross Country; Senior, Art Education Major "Being on both the cross country and track and field team have been very different and difficult during this time. Having your teammates next to you every practice motivates you to do better, and we don’t have that right now. Running on our own can only do so much for us. We like competing and seeing our progress over time. Running on our own doesn’t give us the push that most of us need. But to stay positive, I’ve made one of my … [Read more...] about Vox pop: How are CSUSB athletes staying in shape during the pandemic?

Mental health resources available for student athletes amid game cancellations

October 14, 2020 by Jamiana Gateb 174 Comments

As college athletics around the world have been affected by COVID-19, CSUSB faculty look for ways to help their athletes with their mental health. To most, the cancellation of sports last spring and this fall came at a surprise and disbelief. On August 5, the California Collegiate Athletic Association released this statement regarding fall sports: “Yesterday, the NCAA Division II Presidents Council announced the cancellation of 2020 fall championship events after it was determined to be untenable from an administrative and financial perspective, due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this news, the conference is still looking ahead to the potential of all sports having the … [Read more...] about Mental health resources available for student athletes amid game cancellations

Coyotes Race into the Record Books

April 24, 2018 by Lauren 942 Comments

The CSUSB track and field team's season may be winding down, but the Coyotes are heating up as the CCAA Championship nears. Track and field joined the lineup of CSUSB sports in 2015. Cross country head coach Tom Burleson led the team for the first three seasons. This season, assistant coach Lauren Reimer was named the new head coach. Burleson remains the cross country coach but now also has the title of track and field assistant coach. For their first meet of the season, the Coyotes traveled to Claremont for the Rossi Relays on the campuses of the Claremont Mckenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps colleges. Casie Johnson, who also played for the CSUSB women's basketball team during the … [Read more...] about Coyotes Race into the Record Books

Scorekeeping for the Coyotes

May 4, 2017 by Lauren 167 Comments

By Lauren Jennings |Sports Editor| For as long as I can remember, I have attended baseball games with my family, whether to see the Dodgers, Angels or my hometown team, the Quakes. Baseball was always a family event for me, although I did not always sit and watch games the way I do today. My main reasons for going to games were the mascots, food and fireworks. What happened on the field was the least of my worries as long as my team scored runs and won. Over time though, I became more interested in the game itself and started watching them in person and at home on TV. As I grew older, my dad decided it was time for me to learn how to keep score at professional baseball games, … [Read more...] about Scorekeeping for the Coyotes

Pack the house everyday

January 30, 2017 by Kieron Coleman 132 Comments

By Kieron Coleman |Staff Writer| Supporting athletes on their game days is something that can be a decisive factor when it comes to victory or defeat. Student support so far has been very timid when it comes to game days, which perhaps affects in some of the athletes' games. Men’s and women’s soccer both advanced to the playoffs this past season after both performing better than expected. Women’s volleyball had another outstanding season, winning the conference and making the regional semifinals. As a whole, our athletes are trying to get the backing of the students to come down to watch the games and support the ‘Yotes. “Fans showing up to the game is always a bonus, … [Read more...] about Pack the house everyday

Baseball to start season at home

January 30, 2017 by Lauren 3 Comments

By Lauren Jennings |Sports Editor| The Coyote baseball team, which got its start in 1987, is about to start its 31st season. The team has had its ups and downs throughout the years, as all teams do, but this year's team is ready to pick up from where they left off last year.  They ended last season by losing two games in the CCAA championships, so the team is looking for redemption and a shot at the CCAA title.  "I truly believe this team can make another appearance in the CCAA conference tournament," said current head coach David Martinez. "The top six teams out of 12 make it, so if our team keeps making the strides it is making, we have a chance," added Martinez. The … [Read more...] about Baseball to start season at home

CSUSB gives thanks to the military

January 30, 2017 by Megan Vina 883 Comments

By Megan Vina |Staff Writer| Current and former members of the military do so much for our country, so CSUSB Athletics and the Veterans Success Center (VSC) teamed up to show our appreciation. U.S. military service members, including active-duty service, reserves, National Guard members, veterans, ROTC and their families filled the Coussoulis Arena on Jan. 21. Admission was free for military personnel. The festivities began with a tailgate that included food, entertainment, giveaways and raffles. It continued inside the arena with more entertainment and different appreciation ceremonies. There was a wide array of raffle items, including a Mike Scioscia autographed baseball, … [Read more...] about CSUSB gives thanks to the military

Men’s basketball halfway point

January 21, 2017 by Tyler Vanderelst 162 Comments

By Tyler Vanderelst |Staff Writer| The CSUSB Coyotes men's basketball team's hot start seems to be cooling off after being defeated in five of their last seven games. After starting the season with a record of 5-2, the Coyotes have fallen to 7-7 and 3-6 in conference games.  The season has had its ups and downs due to some significant injuries, and new players getting adjusted to each other, which has led to a season record worse than the team would like to have. "This year we have shown glimpses that we have the ability to be one of the best teams in the nation," said center Phil Reed. "We haven't had the record that we wanted so far, but I am proud of my teammates because … [Read more...] about Men’s basketball halfway point

Men’s soccer seeking new coach

January 21, 2017 by Breeze Rivers 76 Comments

By Breeze Rivers |Staff Writer| For this upcoming 2017 season, the men's soccer program may hire another new coach, or bring back interim head coach Darren Leslie. The men's soccer program reflects on its past as it gets ready for potential changes, 33 years and nine coaches later. The first men’s soccer team in the history of CSUSB athletics was put together in 1984. Led by head coach Cherif Zein, the newly formed Coyotes proved to be successful with an 11-2-0 winning record on the season. Zein is currently still very involved with coaching soccer. He coaches for a club, CZ Elite, as well as for Pasadena High School. The men’s soccer program started off competing at the … [Read more...] about Men’s soccer seeking new coach
