November 15, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Aimee Villalpando  |Staff Writer| Divest Harvard is one of over 400 campaigns at universities across the nation calling for endowments in fossil fuel companies to be terminated, according to divestharvard.com. Harvard currently has $34.6 million invested in the top 200 fossil fuel companies, which is the largest university endowment in the world. Endowments, as defined by the 2012 California State University’s (CSU) Philanthropic Report, are funds to be retained and invested for income-producing purposes. Members of Divest Harvard believe higher education institutions serve as investments in the future of their students and their communities and should not be supporting … [Read more...] about Group seeks to withdraw investments from fossil fuels

CSU executives paid more than accounted

May 27, 2012 by Archived posts

By Alejandra Arana |Staff Writer| CSU top executives reported false information to the public about their salary information, according to a press release sent out by the office of California Senator Leland Yee. According to the senator’s Chief of Staff, Adam Keigwin, executives reported to the public a much lower salary than what is reflected by IRS statements, leading the public to feel betrayed. “They should be helping us out instead of doing things for their own personal benefit,” said student Esmeralda Acosta. “If they were honest from the get-go we would really know how much debt we are in,” said student Kim Gonzalez. Gonzalez expressed that their honesty would help those … [Read more...] about CSU executives paid more than accounted

April 29, 2012 by Archived posts

By Alejandra Arana |Staff Writer| Students for Quality Education (SQE) held a Strike School workshop on April 26 to teach students how to strike and provide more information about the upcoming fee increase for Fall 2012. Students from SQE shared their experiences of past strikes which allowed the other students that were there an inside look on how to protest in a way that will not harm anyone, but bring acknowledgment to their issues. SQE has been active at CSUSB since 2001 and has been a part of sit-ins, strikes and negotiations with the Chancellor’s office to raise awareness about how much the budget cuts, faculty and staff layoffs and fee increases are affecting students. “We … [Read more...] about SQE informing students about fee increases and how to strike

By Kimberly Treloar |Staff Writer| The stress is building in the CSU system. Tuition and fees continue to rise every year and the number of class offerings and the budget are slashed even further. It appears as if this volcano may be near the point of erupting. I think increasing tuition and other fees are probably the worst thing that the CSU system can do to students right now. We are already broke and the constant increases will only force many of us to either have to drop out, or work two to three jobs. How will we be able to obtain an education? According to CSU San Bernardino's website, as of July 2012 the CSU Board of Trustees approved a tuition increase by 12 percent … [Read more...] about Where Tuition Money Really is Going
