Father of the pill dies

Dr. Carl Djerrasi

By Mackenzie Viera |Staff Writer| Dr. Carl Djerassi, best known as the father of birth control, died in his San Francisco home at 91. The chemist developed a molecule that served as the key ingredient to the birth control pill, allowing women to take a new-found control in their lives by preventing unplanned pregnancies. Djerassi wrote many books, one of which was titled “The Man’s Pill”, where he expressed his interest in the way the pill affected society. The evolution of birth control can be traced as far back as 1500 B.C. when women created concoctions made of crocodile feces. K.I.S.S.- Keeping it sexually safe

By Diana Ramos |Staff Writer| February is National Condom Month. The Student Health Center hosted their first event called Keeping It Sexually Safe (K.I.S.S) on Wednesday Feb. 12. This event educated students on contraceptives and sexually transmitted infections (STI). Jeanette Montoya said, “If you’re not sexually active you can still participate, because this event is not meant to pressure you into having sex.” The event was to inform students, so when they decide they are ready, they will know how to take care of themselves. Find advice on sex ed in Student Health Center

By Donte Medder |Staff Writer| One of the many outlets for helping students on campus is the Family Pact treatment center located inside the Student Health Center on campus. Family Pact provides health services for students on campus, mostly dealing with sexually active students. The organization gives education on family planning and counseling, birth control methods, STI counseling including HIV, STI screening and treatment, pregnancy testing and counseling and some cancer screening and referrals. The best part is if you qualify all services are at no cost.
