Campus community takes part in virtual charity

November 6, 2020 by Elissa Perez 420 Comments

CSUSB's Office of Community Engagement Director, Diane Podolske, discusses how the annual Coyote Cares Day event turned into a virtual 5K event. Q: How was the planning process different for this event this year compared to the previous years? A: Typically, we are contacting our community partners for service projects, reserving food trucks and entertainment, and making sure we have everything ready for a fun day of service. Planning for this year was different because it focused more on publicity to recruit participants and to educate them on the level of food insecurity in our local communities. I guess I would say it was easier, but it is really fun to host an in-person service … [Read more...] about Campus community takes part in virtual charity

Hard work gone in flames: Community responds with selfless donations to help him recover

February 20, 2017 by Tommy McCardle 37 Comments

By Tommy McCardle | Contributing Writer | A fire destroyed the box truck owned by Empire Wrestling Federation (EWF) owner Jesse Hernandez during the early hours of Feb. 11. Hernandez was driving the box truck home from an EWF event that took place in Covina on Friday night when he discovered the fire. "A fire started in the rear of the truck where not only did it burn my [wrestling] ring, but also my PA system, lighting equipment and everything else," said Hernandez. Fortunately for Hernandez, the steel frame for the wrestling ring has been salvaged. However, the wood plates, foam padding, canvas, turnbuckle pads, ropes, and tighteners for the ring have been lost due to the … [Read more...] about Hard work gone in flames: Community responds with selfless donations to help him recover

Innovative & fun apps galore

January 31, 2015 by Archived posts 133 Comments

By Camillia Dababneh |Staff Writer| Android and iPhone users rejoice—the following apps may not have the most downloads, but pack a punch in utility and innovation. Oyster is a digital library that allows access to over one million books, with a monthly subscription of $9.95. Users call it “Netflix for E-books,” since it is a streaming service for books. While readers are free to explore a variety of genres, they still have the option of getting an expert recommendation from the application’s editorial team. If you love to cozy up next to a good read, Oyster is definitely for you. Once Oyster becomes familiar what the user is reading, it will recommend books … [Read more...] about Innovative & fun apps galore

Ice bucket critics

August 29, 2014 by Archived posts 300 Comments

By Marlyn Rodriguez |Managing Editor| The controversial ALS ice bucket challenge is the newest social media trend. July of this year, Pete Frates, former Boston College baseball player, announced he suffers from ALS and challenged some friends (NFL players Tom Brady and Matt Ryan) to the ice bucket challenge. That challenge inspired the ALS ice bucket challenge and soon it went viral. The way it works is that a person is challenged to dump ice cold water on themselves (which in theory is supposed to give a person an idea of what it feels like to have ALS). You can either accept the challenge and dump iced water on yourself or refuse to participate and donate money to the fund … [Read more...] about Ice bucket critics

Volunteering is not seasonal help out year around

November 15, 2013 by Archived posts 534 Comments

By Maria Perry |Staff Writer| We tend to spend so much time emphasizing what we want to get during the holidays that we forget about giving and volunteering. I think that volunteering has become viewed as a seasonal activity because we tend to think more about giving to others during the holiday season than throughout the rest of the year. “I think it is the time of year when people think about what they are grateful for,” said student Kathleen Ashbaker. “And they want to help people that are less fortunate than themselves who perhaps don’t have as much.” One of the main problems that makes volunteering hard during other times of the year is that people have to devote more … [Read more...] about Volunteering is not seasonal help out year around

Students get colorful for charity

November 9, 2012 by Archived posts

By Emilie Chacon |Staff Writer| The happiest 5k on the planet passed through San Diego on Nov. 3 at Qualcomm Stadium. The Color Run is a colorful five kilometers where at every kilometer, the runners pass through a color station where a group of people throw a specific color powder on your white outfit: pink at the first station, yellow at the second, orange at the third, blue at the fourth and rainbow at the finish line. The Color Run is not your average race experience. Its main goals are to have fun by running, walking or even dancing to the finish line and not to forget, getting as colorful as you can be. “I usually like to run at home as training,” said student Sophie … [Read more...] about Students get colorful for charity

By Katherine Valadez |Staff Writer| Child abuse victims across America will benefit from over $12,000 raised right here at CSUSB, if a few Coyotes have their way. The Shamrock 5K Run/Walk 2012 is the last event held during "Shamrock Week," which includes a basketball tournament in the Recreational Center.
