The investigation of a CSUSB police officer who pulled a gun out on another officer continues as the university declines to comment. Coyote Chronicle has reached out to Joe Gutierrez, the Assistant Director for the Office of Strategic Communication. "We are aware of the incident and an internal investigation is ongoing. Thus, we have no further comment at this time," said Gutierrez. Dr. John Reitzel, an Associate Professor for the Department of Criminal Justice who has worked with the campus for six years, believes there has been a violation of department guidelines. “At the very least, the alleged offending sergeant appears to have violated a bedrock rule of proper firearm … [Read more...] about Criminal justice professor comments on campus police officer incident

UPD continues to work closely with the campus community
In the aftermath of George Floyd's death, Mike O’Meara of the New York Police Association held a press conference and demanded that the public, legislators, and the press start treating the police with some respect. CSUSB Police Chief Nina Jamsen has a different approach to gaining respect and trust from the CSUSB community. CSUSB, along with the other 22 CSU campus police departments, have publicly denounced police brutality. English major Marlo Brooks, host of Conversations on Race and Policing, says, “We will need more than just a stance on the matter. The future of education should feature more preventative measures to ensure that no future alumnus becomes the next hashtag of unjust … [Read more...] about UPD continues to work closely with the campus community
Reminding students to stay safe on their college campus
What do Ted Bundy, John Norman Collins and Danny Harold Rolling have in common? They are all serial killers who attacked and murdered college students. With the recent attack that took place in the women’s restroom of the Pfau Library on January 14, I was reminded of these three men that targeted women on their own college campus. This act of violence also brought me back to an unsettling experience I had at CSUSB. On July 23, 2019, I walked to parking lot D to move my car closer to my next class. As I approached my car, I noticed a man looking around frantically and acting suspiciously. He stood in between two cars and it was obvious that he was not looking for where he had … [Read more...] about Reminding students to stay safe on their college campus
Students reminded to keep their items safe
Students are urged to be more careful about the safekeeping of their belongings. Apolo Ibanez, a biology major, attended Coyote Fest in 2019. Apolo had a good time at the fest, but then he realized he had lost his phone. The first thing he did was ask his friends to help him track it. “I didn’t know what else to do after I tried tracking it, I didn’t see any cameras on the field that could have helped me find my phone,” said Ibanez. Ibanez could not find his phone. He thinks it is possible that the sim card was taken out to avoid the phone being traced. According to Detective Higgins, there are cameras throughout the campus on the blue phones. "We have them on buildings, … [Read more...] about Students reminded to keep their items safe
Campus police seek the community’s help to ensure campus safety
Campus police work with members of the community to help make the campus’ grounds safe and accessible to anyone who steps foot on campus. Campus safety is a major concern for students, staff, and faculty. They rely on their campus’ police to keep them safe and for everyone else who visits the campus. According to a research study conducted by a criminal defense lawyer, Graham Donath, and digital agency 1point21 Interactive, San Bernardino is ranked as the most dangerous city in California. The crimes that take place in San Bernardino affect future incoming students and their feelings of security. Students’ concerns for safety and available resources impact their involvement in … [Read more...] about Campus police seek the community’s help to ensure campus safety
Student safety in the wake of armed robbery and theater scare
Safety here has become a major talking point at CSUSB, especially after an attempted armed robbery occurred on campus on April 9, in parking lot C. Not only that, but on April 22 a man who was under the influence of a controlled substance was arrested for disrupting a rehearsal in the theater of the Performing Arts building. His bizarre behavior and unusual posturing led witnesses to believe he was possibly armed with a weapon. Nobody was harmed in either situation according to the University Police Department (UPD). However, looking back at these incidents brings up questions: how safe do students feel at CSUSB and what would students like to see improve among … [Read more...] about Student safety in the wake of armed robbery and theater scare
Campus difficulties
By Essence Dennis |Staff Writer| CSUSB has approximately 20,000 students, so there is bound to be some conflict. There are some issues that need to be addressed if we are to build solidarity amongst our campus community. These issues range from freshmen who are upset with how the food is prepared in the Commons to seniors who are complaining that it is difficult for them to meet other students. CAMPUS SAFETY We need to hire more community service officers and emergency medical technicians for when there are emergencies on campus. “With some classes getting out at 8 p.m., it’s dark out and anything could happen,”said Youngblood. I agree, there is a need for change … [Read more...] about Campus difficulties
Campus police are effective and necessary
By Rona Ortiz |Staff Writer| The Police Department at CSUSB is active on campus and very beneficial to students, faculty and staff. The Campus Police Department employs 18 sworn police officers. They have an active support staff including community service officers (CSO). The CSOs are students who are trained to assist the officers and the CSUSB community. Additionally, patrol teams monitor the campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Yet many students are unaware that we have active law enforcement, let alone an actual Police Department on campus. “I’ve never seen an officer on campus,” said Lacey Matson. “I’ve walked to my car on a pitch black night and haven’t … [Read more...] about Campus police are effective and necessary
Police Chief wins Campus Safety Award
By Christopher Johnson |Staff Writer| CSUSB’s Police Chief Jimmie Brown was selected by Campus Safety Magazine as the recipient of the 2010 Campus Safety Director of the Year Award. “I’m still in shock. This is a great thing for (the) CSU system, CSUSB, and (the) police department, but it’s not about me,” said Brown. “It’s about the great men and women in our department.” The nomination for this award came after CSUSB saw a 15 percent decrease in property crimes on campus over the past year, according to the CSUSB news website. Brown has been an active police chief partnering with the San Bernardino Unified School District, San Bernardino County Public Defender’s investigation … [Read more...] about Police Chief wins Campus Safety Award
