Officer presence needed in schools
By Cherae Hunt |Asst. News Editor| Every time I go on social media or turn to a news station, I see a middle or high school student brought down in some way by law enforcement. Seeing these videos make me think: do we really need police guards at our schools? Of course we do. We can’t just get rid of all security officers and risk the safety of adolescent students because of some exaggerated incidents. A video circulated the Internet on Monday, Oct. 26 of a high school girl in South Carolina who was dragged from her desk by Richland County Sheriff Deputy and school resource officer, Ben Fields. “‘You’re either going to come with me, or I’m going to make you,’ said Fields,” … [Read more...] about Officer presence needed in schools

The number of reported sexual assaults on college campuses increased from an average 12 in 2011 to 20 in 2013, according to an America Tonight analysis of campus crime statistics. Emma Sulkowicz, a visual arts senior at Columbia University, claimed she was sexually assaulted in her dorm room two years ago. Simulated campus gunman
By Marlyn Rodriguez |Opinions Editor| CSUSB conducted an Active Shooter Preparedness exercise on Thursday, April 10, at 10:30 a.m. in front of University Hall. Although the specific point of attack took place in one building, the exercise was campus wide. Depending on the circumstances, campus police advise students to either evacuate or seek shelter when this type of situation occurs. “A situation like this occurs on university campuses and throughout the community. We need to make ourselves aware and prepare for the general circumstances,” said Police Chief Jimmie Brown. Brown added that the importance of this simulation is to “make sure that the campus is ready in a situation of … [Read more...] about Simulated campus gunman
Allowing guns on campus could make it safer for students
By Lynn Post |Staff Writer| Many colleges across the United States, including campuses in Utah and Texas have allowed students to carry concealed weapons on campus so long as they have a permit. But why not CSUSB? Students should be allowed to carry their guns on campus if they own what is called a concealed carry permit (CCP). Students with a CCP are not allowed to carry their gun at CSUSB, but with the amount of theft and recent crimes on campus carrying a weapon for safety is not a bad idea. In fact it may be a matter of life or death when faced with a dangerous scenario. If it is late at night a student is walking to their car alone and a suspicious person approaches them … [Read more...] about Allowing guns on campus could make it safer for students
Weather at CSUSB made easy
By Angelina Garibay Staff Writer Jocelyn Pascual is walking about on campus in crop leggings, a t-shirt with a thin sweatshirt and flip-flops on a 48 degree day. “It was warm in Chino and the sun was out when I left,” said a shivering Pascual. Other students have the opposite problem, it’s freezing cold in their hometown, like Wrightwood, and then it’s hot at school. Since the university seems to have its own special climate because it is located up against the foothills the temperatures vary greatly just a few miles away. Sometimes the wind is so fierce you feel like you are in a wind tunnel being blown about with your hair standing on end. There is a solution for this … [Read more...] about Weather at CSUSB made easy
