By Jorge Campos |Staff Writer| Cal State Universities (CSU) are saving money by offering online courses, yet some students say online courses don’t go as in depth as a regular classroom. The result is, universities have figured out a way to save money, but according to students, at the cost of quality education. The CSU system has saved approximately $4 million through the bulk purchase of online advising, class materials, and $1.6 million for plagiarism detection programs, according to the Los Angeles Times. “Although it is still an early stage to start measuring cost, it is important to begin evaluating ways to drive down cost without affecting academic quality,” officials said … [Read more...] about CSUs offer more online classes to save money

Simulated campus gunman
By Marlyn Rodriguez |Opinions Editor| CSUSB conducted an Active Shooter Preparedness exercise on Thursday, April 10, at 10:30 a.m. in front of University Hall. Although the specific point of attack took place in one building, the exercise was campus wide. Depending on the circumstances, campus police advise students to either evacuate or seek shelter when this type of situation occurs. “A situation like this occurs on university campuses and throughout the community. We need to make ourselves aware and prepare for the general circumstances,” said Police Chief Jimmie Brown. Brown added that the importance of this simulation is to “make sure that the campus is ready in a situation of … [Read more...] about Simulated campus gunman
Completely legalizing marijuana becoming a possibility
By Devin Ramos |Staff Writer| Gov. Jerry Brown should reconsider his stance on the recreational use of marijuana in California and watch how Colorado and Washington have adapted to the newly legalized drug. The Huffington Post has reported that Gov. Brown said legalizing the drug would not be a good idea. “A certain amount is okay, but there is a tendency to go to extremes,” said Brown. “The world is pretty dangerous and competitive, I think we need to stay alert.” While our state grants us the ability to get a medical marijuana card, Brown’s statements question if adults know how to limit themselves. Proposition 215 made medical marijuana legal with a doctor’s consent for … [Read more...] about Completely legalizing marijuana becoming a possibility

In California, AB 154 will allow practitioners, certified-midwives, and physician assistants to perform first trimester abortion without a doctors supervision. Assembly Bill 980 will allow more abortion clinics to be held at the same standard as other primary care facilities, making abortion clinics more widely available in rural areas. Governor’s new plan would make “winners” and “losers” of schools
By Caleb Gasteiger |Staff Writer| A new plan to redistribute billions of dollars in California school funds to poorer schools is at the top of Gov. Jerry Brown’s list of priorities despite scrutiny from many California Democrats. Brown’s goal is to get his new funding plan attached to the June budget to which Democratic lawmakers are urging him to pump the brakes on the initiative’s inaction. “I’m always concerned rushing something that is so important and so complex, under a deadline,” Democratic Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla said of Brown’s urgency to incorporate the plan on the June budget. Brown said, in a press conference on April 1, to anyone who plans on opposing his new … [Read more...] about Governor’s new plan would make “winners” and “losers” of schools
Fat, Brown and Vegan: The Basics
By Richard Bowie |Executive Editor| You made it to post two! Hey thanks! You’re either actually curious about veganism and what all the hubbub is about, or you’re my mom. Either way, thanks for sticking around and let’s get right in to it! (And I’m going to need to borrow $20 for gas, mom.) Last time, I introduced you to what Fat, Brown and Vegan was going to be all about – but before I dive into any of that, I thought it best if I just take one step back for a second and explain simply what veganism is and what it means to me. Veganism has only really made it mainstream in the past couple years or so, and it’s easy for me to forget that not everyone has had the same exposure and … [Read more...] about Fat, Brown and Vegan: The Basics
Governor Brown Pushes For Prop. 30
By Brenda Acuna |Staff Writer| Nov. 6 marks a historic election for college students across California as they hit voting booths and determine the fate of public universities’ economic situation. In a recent conference call with CSU newspapers, Gov. Brown urged all college students to vote “yes” on Proposition 30 if they did not want their tuition to increase again. During the 25-minute call, the Governor told the CSU newspapers that his tax measure comes down to a simple choice for voters: either provide funding for schools or allow additional education cuts that will hike up college tuition. Brown warned that if Proposition 30 fails, $1 billion would be cut from higher … [Read more...] about Governor Brown Pushes For Prop. 30
Students should print in the Learning Center
By Shanieka Perrier |Staff Writer| I think using the Learning Center to print papers is better than using the Pfau Library, Jack Brown Hall and SMSU’s Cross Cultural Center. The advantage is it is cheaper to print there than anywhere else on campus. I used to think that the Learning Center should go paperless. When I went to find out why they haven’t, I discovered it’s cheaper not to go paperless. Surprising, right? It’s better for them to use a paper system and not the card-swiping machines because using the machines is costly. Printing was once 10 cents per page everywhere. But due to the maintenance cost they raised the price to 15 cents per page which is more money out of the … [Read more...] about Students should print in the Learning Center
