Coke Bottle Body

May 5, 2016 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Maria de Lourdes Campos |Staff Writer| Social media can be the platform in which celebrities endorse the latest fashion craze. Kim Kardashian, Amber Rose, and Black Chyna swear by waist training as the new standard for beauty. What exactly is a waist trainer? “A waist trainer is a device that is made up essentially of bands of material that wrap tightly around the waist and lower rib cage to provide women with an instantly slimming hourglass figure,” said student Monica Sanchez. Sanchez said that on social media, actresses like Brooke Burke and Jessica Alba were trending because they gave credit to waist trainers for helping them get back into shape after giving … [Read more...] about Coke Bottle Body

November 16, 2015 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Raequan Harrison | Staff Writer | Poor sleeping habits could lead to kidney failure, according to a recent study by Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. The study found that poor sleep could cause kidney disease, especially in women. Researchers evaluated the sleep habits of thousands of women and found too little shut-eye was tied to a more rapid decline in kidney function. "Women who slept five hours or less a night had a 65 percent greater risk of rapid decline in kidney function, compared with women sleeping seven to eight hours a night, the investigators discovered," according to HealthDay News. "This is concerning because as a general population the amount of sleep … [Read more...] about Lack of sleep can cause kidney disease, new study finds

Piercings in the workplace: Can you still get a job?

November 15, 2013 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Donte Medder |Staff Writer| It’s time for the art of expression through body piercing to make its way into the workplace. Currently, workers must now decide if they want to conform to the professional standard of a clean cut work force or maintain a sense of individualism through self-expression like body piercings. But why? The reasoning behind body piercings vary. Some are religious in nature, spiritual, for self-expression, aesthetic value, for sexual pleasure or to conform or rebel against culture. Contemporary piercing is often done in tattoo shops and most often uses safe body piercing materials. One can just look around and see athletes, rock musicians, movie stars and … [Read more...] about Piercings in the workplace: Can you still get a job?

October 19, 2013 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Courtney Mata |Staff Writer| Popular media and society place pressures on all of us to have the perfect body but the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) on campus takes a more accepting approach of society’s views and celebrates women in all shapes and sizes. WRC held a week worth of activities designed to encourage women to love their bodies, despite society’s views. The events ranged from discussions, group workouts and writing positive things about your body on their mirror display. Angelica Davalos, student assistant for the center, held a discussion on women who struggle with body image. Davalos touched on many points explaining how society and peers can have a negative … [Read more...] about Women’s Resource Center promotes positive body image for ladies

By Priscilla Arvizu |Staff Writer| Two-piece bikinis and Speedo season is almost here. If summer has found you unprepared, this is the best time to start paying attention to your look. Summer is one of the most beautiful seasons: hot weather, breezy, colorful clothes and holidays. However, this season can also be frustrating when you have some extra pounds. “Dressing for summer is a challenge at times; attending the gym definitely helps,” said student Jeremy Solavan. Ladies strut your stuff! You can’t wait to put on your summer dresses, daisy duke shorts and bikinis that have been resting peacefully in your closet during the past few chilly months. Relieve stress with everyday activities

October 7, 2012 by Archived posts

By Emelie Chacon |Staff Writer| Now that the school year has started, some students may start to feel overwhelmed by the amount of homework, readings and quizzes that are added on to classes. Here are some tips that can help you manage your stress. Probably one of the most known ways to deal with stress is to practice any kind of physical activities. Like sports, recreational activities allow your body to release endorphins which help your body feel more relaxed. According to Livestrong.com, physical activities can also diminish stress symptoms by decreasing the tension in your muscles, relaxing blood vessels, reducing heart rates and blood pressure. “When I’m stressed out, … [Read more...] about Relieve stress with everyday activities

More regulations on tatto artists are not needed

May 13, 2012 by Archived posts

By Sara Nydam |Staff Writer| The new Safe Body Art Act is posing what I think are unnecessary regulations on professional tattoo artists and piercers in California. AB 300 seeks to raise $55,000 in revenue, according to the San Bernardino County Sun. I believe this money will be spent selfishly. The San Bernardino Country Ordinance is going to comply with the new state law which will “require practitioners at the county’s 91 body-art establishments to undergo blood-born pathogen training” starting in June, reported the SB County Sun. In order to raise the $55,000 for these programs, the state will be taking money from schools and local agencies, which means this act now affects … [Read more...] about More regulations on tatto artists are not needed
