The 2018 MLB season may have started on March 29, the earliest Opening Day in MLB history, but nearly two weeks later, some of the teams were still hosting their own home openers. Of the 30 teams, 13 started at home on March 29, while two other home teams were delayed a day due to inclement weather. The other teams who started the season away from their home fields had their home openers spread throughout the first two weeks of April, with the last home opener going to the Cubs on April 9. Each team had new ways to celebrate the 2018 season, with the most popular being changes or additions to their in-stadium food selection. Other teams also upgraded their scoreboards in one way or … [Read more...] about Major League Baseball is officially back

Patiently waiting for Spring training
Baseball fans are excited to say goodbye to winter storms, and hello to spring sunshine, as Major League Baseball's (MLB) spring training will officially begin play on Feb. 23. Cold weather is a rarity in Southern California. But blistering cold temperatures elsewhere in the country render us the lucky ones. Imagine having to shovel snow every morning to get to your car or 45-mph winds and snow impeding your five block stroll to the office. The daily grind of the elements can be exhausting. A day at the ballpark may be just the remedy, which is another reason why millions of fans are counting down the days until spring (training). Not only has the weather been stark, so has the … [Read more...] about Patiently waiting for Spring training
Baseball seniors say farewell
By Lauren Jennings |Sports Editor| The time of year for teammates to say goodbye to their graduating seniors has once again returned, and the baseball team is getting ready to say farewell to 11 players. Dillon Fahr Fahr (No. 3) joined the Coyotes in 2015 after playing two years at Mesa Community College. His first year at CSUSB, he played in 36 games, starting 28 of them and batting .235. In his second year, he played just 10 games before suffering a season-ending injury. Fahr still made good use of what little playing time he had, hitting .241 and recording two doubles and a home run. Fahr hit .316 in his final year with the Coyotes, scoring a team-leading 38 runs. He led … [Read more...] about Baseball seniors say farewell
Scorekeeping for the Coyotes
By Lauren Jennings |Sports Editor| For as long as I can remember, I have attended baseball games with my family, whether to see the Dodgers, Angels or my hometown team, the Quakes. Baseball was always a family event for me, although I did not always sit and watch games the way I do today. My main reasons for going to games were the mascots, food and fireworks. What happened on the field was the least of my worries as long as my team scored runs and won. Over time though, I became more interested in the game itself and started watching them in person and at home on TV. As I grew older, my dad decided it was time for me to learn how to keep score at professional baseball games, … [Read more...] about Scorekeeping for the Coyotes
First Spring Training with Wells and Ouellette
By Gabriel Ramos | Contributing Writer | The start of Minor League Baseball means it's time for former Coyotes Tyler Wells and Will Ouellette to head back to the pitcher's mound for their newly assigned teams. However, before Wells and Ouellette traveled to their 2017 team destinations, they participated in Spring Training in Florida. Wells was a starting pitcher for the Coyotes for three years. The Minnesota Twins drafted him in the 15th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft. Wells was assigned to the rookie-level Elizabethton Twins, where he racked up five wins and two losses while posting a 3.23 earned run average (ERA). He made 10 appearances all starts. He also … [Read more...] about First Spring Training with Wells and Ouellette
Baseball plays off campus
By Gabriel Ramos |Contributing Writer| The fact that the school has a baseball team off campus is a fact that many aren't aware of. Most students know that the Coussoulis Arena is home to our volleyball and basketball teams. The Coyote Premier Field hosts our soccer teams and the Coyote Softball Park is for the softball team. Fiscalini Field has served as Cal State San Bernardino’s baseball field for quite some time now. It was built back in 1934 and opened in 1936. Multiple Major League Baseball teams used the facility for their spring training games upon its opening. It was formerly known as Perris Hill Park Ball Field, but was renamed in 1993 after John … [Read more...] about Baseball plays off campus
Winter and spring athletic facilities back in use
By Yera Nanan |Staff Writer| Though many of our winter and spring sports are outdoor sports and aren't played on school grounds, the fields we use have a unique history of their own. The baseball team uses Fiscalini Field for practice and home games. The 3,500 capacity field is located only 15 minutes away from CSUSB, right off of East Highland Avenue. Fiscalini Field was first built in 1934 and originally named after Fredrick Thomas Perris, who helped construct the early stages of the city as a railroad developer. The field was then renovated in 1993 and renamed after city native John Fiscalini, who found success playing for San Bernardino High School, Cal Berkeley and the … [Read more...] about Winter and spring athletic facilities back in use
Athletes offseason conditioning
By Kieron Coleman |Staff Writer| When it comes to athletes at CSUSB, the off-season is a time where teams come together to work on strength and agility. It allows their muscles to be in the best possible condition for when the season comes around. Most college sports seasons are intense because of the large amount of games played over such a short period of time. Athletes have to do their workouts around their scheduled classes. Before the quarter starts, coaches send out times where they are not allowed to schedule any of their classes. Athletes work in a separate gym at the school, where it gives them the opportunity to work out with two highly knowledgeable coaches. "The … [Read more...] about Athletes offseason conditioning
Pack the house everyday
By Kieron Coleman |Staff Writer| Supporting athletes on their game days is something that can be a decisive factor when it comes to victory or defeat. Student support so far has been very timid when it comes to game days, which perhaps affects in some of the athletes' games. Men’s and women’s soccer both advanced to the playoffs this past season after both performing better than expected. Women’s volleyball had another outstanding season, winning the conference and making the regional semifinals. As a whole, our athletes are trying to get the backing of the students to come down to watch the games and support the ‘Yotes. “Fans showing up to the game is always a bonus, … [Read more...] about Pack the house everyday
Baseball to start season at home
By Lauren Jennings |Sports Editor| The Coyote baseball team, which got its start in 1987, is about to start its 31st season. The team has had its ups and downs throughout the years, as all teams do, but this year's team is ready to pick up from where they left off last year. They ended last season by losing two games in the CCAA championships, so the team is looking for redemption and a shot at the CCAA title. "I truly believe this team can make another appearance in the CCAA conference tournament," said current head coach David Martinez. "The top six teams out of 12 make it, so if our team keeps making the strides it is making, we have a chance," added Martinez. The … [Read more...] about Baseball to start season at home
