Racking up a 9-ball victory

By Robert Klimper |Staff Writer| Pool players gathered in the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) to compete for a chance to claim victory and a $25 gift card on Feb. 1. Every other Wednesday, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. this quarter, student gamers compete in the 9-ball tournament held in Gamers Lounge. The tournament sets up its participants in a simple tournament style, where the winner of a best two out of three match moves up. Eventually two are left, and battle to see who is the champion for the week. Each quarter, the type of tournament is swapped. Honored researcher

By Rachel Rundengan |Opinions Editors| Physics professor Tim Usher has been selected as the university’s 2015-2016 Outstanding Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activities Award winner.   Every two years, the award goes to one CSUSB faculty member presented during CSUSB’s Meeting of the Minds student research symposium.   The award is based on a professor’s sustained research efforts in their field.   This year, Usher stood out amongst all the other candidates.   In his speech Usher said that it was a great honor to have received the award.   “It is also a great honor and privilege to work with outstanding students and excellent faculty at … [Read more...] about Honored researcher

CSUSB honors librarian for contribution

Cannes Film Festival

By Natalie Padron |Staff Writer| Cannes legendary actor, Jean-Pierree Léaud, who debuted in 1959, will be presented with the honorary Palme d’or (French for Golden Palm) award at the 69th Cannes Film Festival. The event once known as the International Film Festival, until 2002, is now the Festival De Cannes, as they say in French, and it previews footage of upcoming films that cover the whole spectrum of genres. This annual invitation-only gathering of talents was founded in 1946 and put into action in 1947 with films from 16 different countries. Psychology professor awarded for research

By Jocelyn Colbert |Staff Writer| Dr. Cynthia Crawford, a psychology professor at CSUSB, has been named the recipient of the 2015 California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology (CSUPERB) award. “I was surprised being awarded,” said Crawford. “Most of the people that win tend to be biologists, and I’m a psychologist and I won! CSUSB community service earns President’s Honor Roll

By Jorge Campos |Staff Writer| CSUSB’s community service earned President’s Honor Roll status and received national recognition for the eighth year in a row. In 2006, the President of the United States started recognizing higher institutions who provide community service that improves the health, education and surroundings of the community. Crawford wins instructor award

By Stephanie Para |Staff Writer| Psychology professor Dr. Cynthia Crawford was “ambushed” Monday morning by President Tomas Morales and her colleagues who awarded her with this year’s Outstanding Teacher Award. Poet wins professor of the year

El Presidente Tomás Morales dubbed Juan Delgado, “El Jefe” after presenting him with this year’s Professor of the Year Award. Professor Delgado has become a great asset to this university. Kati Russo wins student film Gold Award

Russo was recently granted the Gold Award for her student film “23 Hours.” The Gold Award, presented by California Film Awards, is a nationally recognized award that provides a forum for talented filmmakers to be recognized for their work, creativity and achievements. The California Film Awards held a red carpet dinner event this year on Jan. 26 at Bahia Resort Hotel in San Diego. Popescu wins Sony Faculty Award

By Jounghun Kim |Staff Writer| Assistant professor Mihaela Popescu was selected as one of the best users of technology in the classroom in the whole California State University system. Popescu was honored by the 2012 Sony Electronic Faculty Award. The award is something that early career educators receive for their innovative uses of technology in the classroom. This system-wide award, which means that the Cal State University system selects the best professors of the year. This year there were four professors that were selected out of 23 Cal State University campuses.
