OPINION: Debunking ‘Who Are the Refugees’

March 7, 2017 by Arturo Brooks Leave a Comment

By Arturo Brooks |Staff Writer| At the "Who Are the Refugees" forum held last week, non-factual messages were presented, hidden under the emotional overtone.  CSUSB’s Center for Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies hosted this forum to educate on the crisis and hardships that refugees face. However, I don't think this intention was accomplished. I personally attended this forum to see what would be presented to my fellow peers. Facts were discussed, as well as some controversial topics that peaked my interest. The information forced me to ask myself if it was factual or if this was a “sympathy forum,” and I began to question the panelists' credibility. The recorded opinions are … [Read more...] about OPINION: Debunking ‘Who Are the Refugees’

Mayo Clinic and Olmsted Medical Center research center conducted a study and found that seven out of 10 Americans are inclined to use prescription drugs, and over 50 percent of the population use more than one drug.   “Often when people talk about health conditions they’re talking about chronic conditions such as heart disease or diabetes,” Dr. Jennifer St. Sauver Ph.D. of the Mayo Clinic.   “However, the second most common prescription was for antidepressants—that suggests mental health is a huge issue and is something we should … [Read more...] about Prescriptions drugs usage rate on the rise across the nation

Vegan-American: The Other-Other Lifestyle

October 12, 2015 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Sarah Johnson | Staff writer Veganism is on the rise from sea to shining sea, despite America being burger central. Veganism has grown to 2.5 percent of the United States population, according to Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG). In 2013, one million Americans considered themselves vegan, 78 percent female and 21 percent male, according to VRG. So, what is veganism? Most people think vegetarianism and veganism are one and the same; this is a common misconception. A vegan "chooses to avoid using or consuming animal products. While vegetarians choose not to use flesh foods, vegans also avoid dairy and eggs, as well as fur, leather, wool, down, and cosmetics or chemical … [Read more...] about Vegan-American: The Other-Other Lifestyle

North Korea releases hostages

November 15, 2014 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Yara Del Rio-Dominguez |Staff Writer| Americans detained in North Korea have been released back into the United States (U.S.) after being sentenced to six years of hard labor. Both Kenneth Bae, 46, former Lynwood resident, and Matthew Todd Miller, 24, a Bakersfield resident, are the last two Americans detained in North Korea, according to CNN. “The charges for which Miller and the other detained U.S. citizens were arrested and imprisoned would not give rise to arrest or imprisonment in the U.S.,” said spokesman Darby Holladay. Unclear of exactly what law they broke, both Americans remained in North Korea and did not know exactly what their charges were until they went to trial. The … [Read more...] about North Korea releases hostages

Gas prices burn holes in students pockets

March 8, 2012 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Tom Stillwagon |Staff Writer| The price of gas has likely gone up in your town again this past week. You aren't alone; the entire nation is facing this dilemma. Gas prices are currently averaging $4.35 per gallon in San Bernardino for regular unleaded. This is up from a national average of $3.27 in December 2011. Students are feeling the extra burden on their wallets. Justin Lamb, student commuter from Riverside, is no exception. “My mom, she would give me some gas money each week,” said Lamb. “It used to last me all week, like 15 or 20 bucks, I could get through a week, week and a half. Now gas is like $4.30 everywhere you go. I can’t even go four or five days driving back … [Read more...] about Gas prices burn holes in students pockets
