College grads are unprepared and under skilled

November 24, 2015 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Alana Roche' |Staff Writer| Students are not prepared for life after college—having a degree is not enough. If you're like me, you were told that as long as you go to college you will be able to get an amazing job. Well unfortunately that is turning out to be not true. When my parents went to school 30 years ago, they knew as long as they received a college degree they would be guaranteed a job, but times have changed. Seventy-three percent of employers don’t feel college is preparing students for the workforce, according to Millennial Branding, a Gen Y research and consulting firm. The survey was conducted nationally among 2,978 respondents. "31 percent of student … [Read more...] about College grads are unprepared and under skilled

Adult life for Millennials harder than previous generations

November 24, 2015 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Alana Roche' |Staff Writer| "Sixty-eight percent of those questioned believe today’s generation are forced to endure more hardship than young people 40-years-ago," according to a study commissioned by health retailer Holland & Barrett. Adult life for the Millennial generation is much harder than it used to be. "Millennials (whom we define as between ages 18 to 34 in 2015) are projected to number 75.3 million, surpassing the projected 74.9 million Boomers," according to Pew Research Center. My mom always tells me she feels sorry that I have to grow up in the Millennial generation. We are fortunate to have innovative technologies and social media, but we also face issues … [Read more...] about Adult life for Millennials harder than previous generations

Social media fame has detriments and benefits

November 5, 2015 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Alana Roche' |Staff Writer| Social media makes you famous in this day and age and social media users have become our celebrities. However, this could be either good or bad. Social media sites like Instagram, Twitter, and Vine have become much more than a place for people to share with friends. People can gain thousands of followers and potentially become famous. 'Instafamous' is defined as "a person who's famous on the popular app Instagram because they have thousands of followers. Person is usually a pretty girl who posts a thousand pictures of her face or whatever food she's eating," according to Urban Dictionary. India Love Westbrooks has received public attention … [Read more...] about Social media fame has detriments and benefits

Celebrity obsessions driven by insecurities

November 2, 2015 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Alana Roche' |Staff Writer| Celebrities have become such an obsession for people because we want to live the lavish life of the rich and famous. Celebrity life has become so in demand that there are networks dedicated to them, like E! and Bravo. The infamous show "Keeping up with the Kardashians" is about to premiere it's eleventh season and has been on air since 2007 on E! and is known for the family that everyone loves to hate. The Kardashian women have become the celebrity royalty, but not just on reality TV. They have three clothing stores, called DASH located in LA, NY, and Miami, clothing lines, hair and makeup lines, kids clothing and their new, individually owned … [Read more...] about Celebrity obsessions driven by insecurities

Not all Greek organizations deserve strict regulation

October 16, 2015 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Alana Roche | Staff Writer | I believe that the media only focuses on negative Greek organization’s behaviors because those stories attract the most attention and that is what audiences desire. However, I also believe that campus administrators should have stricter rules and guidelines preventing negative attitudes and actions. I don’t know much about Greek life because I am not in a sorority or close to anybody that is in one, so I am writing from an outsider perspective, based on what I have witnessed. My first encounter with Greek life has been on the CSUSB campus. From what I have seen in recruiting practices by sororities is that they have a huge focus on helping their … [Read more...] about Not all Greek organizations deserve strict regulation

Peeple app is risky business

October 12, 2015 by Archived posts 2 Comments

By Alana Roche |Staff Writer| A new, controversial app called “Peeple” is coming out, allowing you to “rate” another person based on their personality on a scale of one to five stars. I think Peeple is risky. It’s an unfair app and can cause detriment to a person’s reputation. The app is being called the “Yelp for people” because of its similarities. Instead of rating restaurants or stores, you rate people like friends, family or acquaintances. “This could definitely make or break someone, and if your ratings don’t do you justice, how will you succeed? You won’t, because an app said you were rated poorly,” said student Adriana Contreras. Peeple has been so controversial that … [Read more...] about Peeple app is risky business

The Last Man on Earth – review

March 7, 2015 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Alana Roche' |Staff Writer| On March 1, Fox presented the adventures of "The Last Man on Earth", starring Will Forte as Phil Miller in the year 2021. Visiting every state and ending up in Tuscan, Arizona, Miller is seen crossing off every state that he has visited alone off a map in the beginning of the first episode. The show had a slow start, leaving me bored. However, it did have its funny moments and I did catch myself laughing throughout the show. In the first episode of part one, Miller makes fun of Tom Hanks from "Castaway" for talking to a volleyball, but in the middle of the first episode, we see that he does the same using multiple different kinds of balls. Miller … [Read more...] about The Last Man on Earth – review

A sponge out of water

February 14, 2015 by Archived posts Leave a Comment

By Alana Roche' |Staff Writer| The SpongeBob characters were only out of the water 15 min. in the latest rendition, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. It appeared to be enough, because the movie grossed $55.4 Million during it's opening weekend. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water premiered on Friday, February 6th and rose quickly to the #1 box office movie in America. Before watching this movie, I looked up the movie reviews. As seen on rottentomatoes.com, 75% of the critics liked it while 63% of the audience also enjoyed it. Seeing those reviews were discouraging, so I looked at Fandango.com and saw it was given 4.5 stars from fan ratings. I decided to take my … [Read more...] about A sponge out of water
