Pro-choice advocates continue discussion through online platforms

April 15, 2020 by Sydney Fregozo 179 Comments

The spread of COVID-19 has pushed people in office to enforce orders that require people to practice social distancing and only go out in public for essential services. One of these services, abortion, has been deemed by many states, such as Texas, to not be an essential service and many clinics are either being shut down or are denied funds to perform the procedure. The short film “Grapefruit,” directed by Mike Peters, had an online film premiere on April 7 to spark the discussion of a woman’s right to an abortion and the obstacles she may face, such as being led into a fake clinic.  “My hope is to be a catalyst to encourage discussion,” Peters said.  “Grapefruit” focuses on a … [Read more...] about Pro-choice advocates continue discussion through online platforms

Banning abortion is a war on women

May 22, 2019 by Ashley Balmaceda 379 Comments

The controversy stirred as news broke that Georgia, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, Mississippi and Alabama all signed abortion bans. These bills got signed at the hands of the GOP, and their goal is to eventually overturn Roe v. Wade, and with the Supreme Court majority being conservative, this is a real fear many women are facing. Five of the six states signed the “heartbeat bill” which means abortion is no longer allowed once a heartbeat is found. That could be as early as six weeks. That is usually the time a woman realizes she’s pregnant in the first place. Essentially, this bill forces women to carry out the pregnancy. Alabama leads the way with the 25 men voting in favor of the … [Read more...] about Banning abortion is a war on women

“Gimme Shelter” an empowering film

January 31, 2014 by Archived posts 8 Comments

By Chrisoula Baroudos |Staff Writer| Vanessa Hudgens’ performance in “Gimme Shelter” captured her audience through the realistic role as Agnes “Apple” Bailey. Director Ron Krauss did a great job capturing the spiritual elements of the story based upon actual events about young girls who are pregnant. Krauss is an award winning filmmaker and is best known for his film “Puppies for Sale,” and most recently “Gimme Shelter.” The film is a quick 1 hour and 40 minutes and has a PG-13 rating for a few brutal scenes of abuse, drug talk and some rough, but apropos, language. I recommend this movie for young girls because it teaches them the importance of self-respect and the realism of … [Read more...] about “Gimme Shelter” an empowering film

carmen hererra planned parenthood

By Carmen Herrera Addressing the ongoing debate on whether or not to remove funding from Planned Parenthood, Arizona Senator Jon Kyl (R) said: "If you want an abortion, you go to Planned Parenthood. And that's well over 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood does.” In actuality, only 3 percent of the services Planned Parenthood provides are for abortions, according to the organization’s website. Kyl got it seriously wrong.  Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, said that “97 percent of the health care Planned Parenthood provides is preventive, and every federal dollar Planned Parenthood receives goes toward providing preventive health care to women.” Though the … [Read more...] about Planned Parenthood: 97 percent abortion free
