If you are looking to make new friends while playing in a competitive sports league, intramural sports are for you.
There are several sports to choose from like volleyball, soccer, football, basketball and softball.
If those sports do not interest you, there is always the opportunity to suggest a new sport.
“At the start of this year we launched human foosball,” said Intramural Lead Supervisor Asharee Brown.
“But sadly it wasn’t too effective so we’re looking into marketing it more,” added Brown.
There is no cost to join any league, only a willingness to participate and have fun.
An average of 200 to 500 participants sign up every quarter, all ready to have a good time and make new friends.
“My favorite part was making new friends while playing my favorite sports,” said Amanda Rodriguez.
The students who sign up range from beginners to those who have practiced the sport for years.
Even those who simply want to learn how to play a new sport are signing up.
Each quarter features new teams and returning teams.
There are a few options when signing up, such as becoming a team captain, creating your own team or being a free agent.
Free agents are individual students who do not have a team at the time and would like to be placed on a team.
There is a capacity of 24 teams for every sport, so there is no need to worry. There is definitely a spot for you.
There are many benefits to joining a team, like meeting new friends, team building and exercise.
Participating in intramural sports may also enhance your school spirit and could help motivate you to become a successful student.
Networking is also a big part of intramural sports.
The leagues are open to students, staff and alumni, giving way to create long lasting connections for your future.
If you are worried about not having time to play, fear not, because most teams only meet on game days.
“It was only about an hour or so, once per week during the actual game,” said Rodriguez.
Most leagues do not hold practice. It is up to you to if you want to invest more time to practice and and improve in the sport.
Participating in an intramural sport can also be great for those with a competitive spirit.
Do not become too overwhelmed remember to enjoy it and have a good time.
Each game is regulated by the intramural rules.
These rules help maintain a fun and worry-free environment for athletes to play in.
Everybody is there to have fun, so do not forget to bring your sportsmanship, or you will be asked to go get it.
Keep an eye out for fall quarter sign-ups and get out of your comfort zone. Join a league that interests you and get ready to have some fun, because you will.
