Hiking and backpacking with the Rec Center

By Aaron Wolf |Staff Writer|

Walking down a narrow path you feel calm and relaxed. The birds are chirping and bees are buzzing. You are one with nature. This relaxing and fulfilling experience could be yours.

CSUSB Recreation and Wellness Center (Rec Center) offers camping trips throughout the quarter. The trips are scheduled between May and September and a variety of locations are explored.

The next destination is Yosemite National Park. This trip is scheduled for April 29 through May 1.

Sign-ups conclude on April 27.

According to the Adventure Guide, Yosemite is one of the first and most popular parks in the United States.

Yosemite is known for its beautiful views and waterfalls. The expansive valleys and a vast wilderness make Yosemite an adventurer’s dream.

The trip will also include side trips to notable sights around the park. The well-known rock climbing destination, El Capitan, will be a highlight of the trip.

The weekend of May 27 through May 30 will offer two different trips.

The Great National Basin in Nevada will offer a high altitude desert basin experience. Salt flats and diverse mountain terrain will mark this trip.

Trip goers will sleep in tents while on a three-day hike to Wheeler Peak, which is home to a glacier.

That same weekend a separate trip will explore the Grand Canyon National Park. This will also be a three day, two-night trip.

Trip goers will stay at Mather campground and base trip operations from there. The Grand Canyon is known for its scenic views, as well as the Colorado River.

Sequoia National Park will be the final trip of the quarter. This park is known for its giant sequoia trees as well as canyons, mountains and caverns.

This trip is scheduled for three days and two nights. The trip will be June 3 through June 5.

For those who are less inclined to overnight trips, the Rec Center also offers a “Hike of the Month” each month. One hike of the month is free to students per year.

On May 8 the hike will be to Third Stream Falls, a waterfall near Lytle Creek. This hike is scheduled to run from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Faculty, staff, alumni and community members are welcome on the hike of the month.

See Adventure Guide on the Rec Center website for pricing. Prices range from $80 to $300 depending on the trip and your status.

The Rec Center also offers backpacking trips for those with a strong taste for adventure.

The John Muir Day Trip is scheduled June 19 through June 21. This trip will be marked by an early morning hike to watch the sunrise from Glacier point

During the summer the Rec Center will also be taking a road trip in late July.

This trip will explore the historic U.S. Route 395, which will cover four states.

Convict Lake as well as Mammoth Lakes will be explored as well. The cost of this trip is $125 for students and $155 for faculty, alumni and staff. All trips are for 18 years of age and over.
