Happy 5th Birthday CSUSB Rec Center!

March 18, 2012 by Archived posts 1 Comment

It’s the CSUSB Student Recreation & Fitness Center’s birthday!

In April, our school’s Rec Center will be celebrating its 5th birthday; students should be especially proud being that it was our decision to contribute our tuition towards its production.

Over 30 years ago, students’ recreational needs mostly depended on intramural sports and were confined to a tent which can now be found located behind our state-of-the-art gym.

It wasn’t until 2006 that students were presented with a fee referendum to vote on. Such proposal suggested an increase of students’ tuition in order to fund the assembly of the Rec Center; 73 percent of students voted yes.

“We basically took our ASI officers on tour to several other campuses rec center’s to show them how beneficial a gym would be to our campus,” said Raulabel Gonzalez, the Rec Sports’  facility coordinator who attended and graduated from CSUSB.

“Those students sacrificed a lot so that future students could enjoy all the gym had to offer,” said Gonzalez.

Conscious of conserving as much as possible, our Rec Center is the first in the country to install Precor elliptical machines, which generate electricity as they’re used.

Additional highlights of the Rec Center include a pool, climbing wall and wellness and nutritional counseling; as well as CSUSB Outdoors, which provide: camping, mountain biking, fishing and hiking.

Aside from a discounted price on the outdoor attractions, everything offered by the Rec Center is completely free; it would be foolish not to take advantage of all that is offered.

Gonzalez said, “It’s flattering how appreciated our Rec Center is by students and administration alike. For example, the school was recently closed for a day due to heavy winds and there were several incoming calls from concerned students and faculty that still had intentions of working out. They were disappointed when we let them know that the gym would also be closed for the day.”

Appreciation for the students’ decision is exhibited every year when a party is held in honor of the center’s launch and presence on campus.

The celebration will be located at the Rec Center and at Wilson Park on the evening of April 3 from 4 to 10 p.m.  after spring break.

Students be sure to include the events in your calendar to avoid missing out on all the fun.

Similar to Rec Sports’ Late Night event, there will be food, games and plenty of fun to go around.

Giveaways will be a live screen prints, massages, etc. and several events occurring have been planned throughout the day with the intent to satisfy those attending.

Details of the celebration are still being discussed but a plethora of exciting events and giveaways are in store. More information will be available on Facebook soon.
