The CSUSB community came together last week at Monday’s kickoff parade and opening ceremony to enjoy traditional meals, raffles, and amazing performances from local artists.

The Cross-Cultural Center partnered with the Black Faculty and Staff Association, Pan African Student Success Center, and Office of Black Student Success to host a wonderful “Traditional Meals” event in celebration of Black History Month.

“Traditional Meals” provided the CSUSB community with delicious dishes from the rich heritage of traditional African American cuisines. There were also games and activities for attendees to play while enjoying tunes from an energetic DJ alongside a powerful spoken word poet. Food provided included; mac and cheese, mixed greens, catfish, and peach cobbler.

This event was put together with a specific goal in mind; bringing the community together to appreciate the experience of delectable food that has brought black families together for decades. Associate Director of SMSU Operations and President of the Black Faculty, Staff, and Student Association, Anthony Roberson, explained why throwing this event was important.

“Soul Food is about bringing family together… [we] spread rich history with one another about food that is culturally and historically significant…. It’s good for the soul, it reminds you of a good place and time”.

And bring the family together, it did! The food provided to the CSUSB community was gone in an hour or less. This event allowed students to bond over dishes they loved and cherish while also providing students an opportunity to taste new foods and learn a bit of the history too. A student by the name of Aniyah felt a overwhelming presence of nostalgia when enjoying a meal and how that meal resonates with her.

“Events like this keep us connected to culture. I think for me, the little events remind me of home and my grandparents… Spices and recipes have history and meaning, with many of these dishes holding significance”.

Events like this spark relevant conversations around cultural identity, allowing students to taste and learn the historical significance of these dishes that have been passed down through many generations. Students and faculty were allotted the opportunity to share personal stories around these comfort dishes, further bringing the essence of familial connection to CSUSB’s campus.

“Traditional Meals” was more than just an event for food. It was a reminder of the importance of community and how food connects people. The event created a thriving environment perfect for unity and celebration. Make sure to be on the lookout for more events hosted by Cross-Cultural Connections as well as the other organizations on campus!
