With incidents occurring back-to-back in the first and second weeks of classes, campus police remind students, staff, and faculty to stay alert of their surroundings and encourage them to take advantage of the Community Service Officers escorts on their campus walks.
On January 14, the University Police Department (UPD) arrested Luis Lopez after he physically assaulted a female student on the 4th floor of the library women’s restroom. Lopez is currently restricted from campus, but should he be released from jail and seen on campus, contact UPD and avoid interaction with him.
4th-year CSUSB student Victoria Orozco stated, ” I was on the same floor doing homework and all of a sudden I heard a girl screaming for help. No one really reacted, including myself because I was scared, but a staff member went to help her as soon as she came out.”
On January 15, suspicious activity and disturbances were called into UPD about Nathan Pedroza, who is not affiliated with CSUSB. UPD issued Pedroza a 7-Day Stay Away Order, but if seen, avoid contact with him and inform the UPD.
The university takes a number of precautionary measures to ensure protection for everyone on campus and asks that if you see any suspicious activities, vehicles, or persons, to immediately report it to UPD, or dial 9-1-1.
CSUSB will be hosting two free “If You See Something, Say Something” workshops available for all students, faculty, and staff. Wednesday, January 29 from 1 PM-5 PM in CS-128, participants will learn “How to Survive an Act of Violence” and they’ll be given another opportunity to attend on Tuesday, February 11 from 12 PM- 1 PM in HP-124, CSUSB UPD will cover training on how to properly use pepper spray.
Safety for all students, faculty, and staff is CSUSB’s main concern, so being aware of your surroundings is key.
