The CSUSB Coyotes tamed the Azusa Pacific Cougars with a final score of nine to five on Feb. 7 advancing to a season record of 3-0.
At the end of the first inning the Coyotes had zero runs and one hit by outfielder Aaron Beckley, with one runner left on base.
During the second inning the Coyotes took the lead scoring the first run of the game, with a homerun from first basemen Andrew Harrison and ended the inning with three hits and two runners on base.
Later in the fourth inning the Cougars showed their first signs of life, scoring two runs on a triple by Cougar outfielder Domenic Biagini which brought in two RBIs (runs batted in).
In addition, Azusa outfielder Richie Brown doubled down, allowing Biagini to reach home plate, making the score 1-3 in Azusa’s favor.
Coyote Infielder Jake Pilkerton answered and scored a run in the fourth, making the score 2-3 in favor of the Cougars.
During the fifth inning, Coyote infielder Curtis Cassise scored on a sacrifice fly by infielder Trevor McMaster tying up the game 3-3.
The Coyotes regained control during the sixth inning with a score by Pilkerton on a single by shortstop Christian Gomez.
The Cougars were unable to score during the sixth inning after Cougar infielder Joel Belk struck out at the plate.
The Coyotes took a commanding lead during the seventh inning when outfielder Michael Castello brought in two runners with a homerun making the score 7-3.
The Cougars answer back in the eighth inning scoring two runs making the score 7-5 in the Coyotes’ favor.
Later in the final inning the Coyotes increased their lead to seal the deal, scoring two more runs on a home run by infielder Billy Hamilton making the final score 9-5.
Before the season started, Head Coach Don Parnell stated the team’s most prominent weakness was their youth.
However the young team has proven to be a force to be reckoned with.
Castello led the Coyotes with three RBIs and Hamilton followed close behind with two RBIs.
Junior pitchers James Trebus and Kerry Kelley struck out 11 Azusa Cougars, eight for Trebus and three for Kelley.
Seniors Andrew Harrison, Billy Hamilton, and Michael Castello all hit home runs, contributing to the Coyote victory.
Furthermore, the Cougars were only able to make five hits against the Coyotes leaving the diamond with a 1-3 record for the season.
In addition after that game the all time series between Azusa Pacific and CSUSB stands at 13-13.
On the other hand, the Coyotes continue to display their dominance this season increasing their record to 3-0 for the season.
Come out to Fiscalini field this Thursday and Friday at 2 p.m. as the Coyotes take on the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos.
