The wage gap myth
By Jacob Collins |Online Editor| The gender based wage gap simply does not exist. With factors such as job choices, experience, education and amount of hours worked the gender based wage gap is almost unrecognizable. Women of course should make the same amount of money per dollar as men do and they already do. Many like to point to Obama's statement he made during the 2012 State of the Union address: "Women (are) paid 77 cents on the dollar for doing the same work as men." However the non-partisan website known for fair fact checking Politifact found that statement to be mostly false. That 77 percent figure takes men and women regardless of their occupation and compares … [Read more...] about The wage gap myth
“Deadpool” gets approved after six years
By Jacob Collins | Online Editor | "Deadpool" hit the box office on Feb. 12, setting the record for the biggest Friday opening, and opening weekend for an R-rated movie. A longtime favorite character of comic book readers finally has his own movie after the monstrosity that was "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." The movie isn't the typical superhero movie that Marvel fans are used to. Unlike other characters on the silver screen, Deadpool is an anti-hero. While he isn't an evil character, he certainly isn't a goody two-shoes either. The casting for the movie was excellent, Ryan Reynolds was prefect as "Deadpool," I can't see another actor doing as great a job as him. It's like Robert … [Read more...] about “Deadpool” gets approved after six years

Tipping is socially overrated
By Jacob Collins |Asst. Online Editor| Tipping is a cancer that has infested our culture and shows no sign of going into remission. It relies on social force to get patrons to pay additional money beyond the listed service price. Tipping should be replaced by employers who pay their employees a living wage instead of relying on patrons to do that for them. This would lead to better financial stability for their employees and stop the social extortion of money from patrons. "When we tip, we are essentially buying the right to avoid disapproval and guilt -- a uniquely first-world problem," stated Hunter Stuart in a Huffington Post article. Many claim that tipping is to reward … [Read more...] about Tipping is socially overrated
Licensed to carry should be OK
By Jacob Collins |Asst. Online Editor| Those with a license to carry a concealed weapon should be able to carry their firearms on college campuses. I believe there is no good reason for this restriction and it negatively impacts an individual's right to self-defense. Many opponents to concealed weapons at universities have a myriad of reasons, all or most of which are equally moronic. A popular argument is that firearms are not necessary or that other means of self-defense work better. I disagree with these arguments. On California university campuses, the only weapons you can legally use in self-defense are pepper spray or a folding knife less than two and a half inches long … [Read more...] about Licensed to carry should be OK
Media creates Islamophobia hype
By Jacob Collins |Asst. Online Editor| A triple homicide over a parking space is hardly newsworthy enough for national mass media coverage and at best is a local news story. However throw in buzzwords like "Islamophobia," "terrorism" and "hate crime" and now you have a juicy story that will be broadcast around the world. I don't mean to diminish the value of the lives of the murder victims. Any murder is a heinous act that is both a tragedy for the victims and the families of the victims involved. Craig Hicks is accused of killing three Muslim students at the apartment complex where both Hicks and the victims of the murder lived. The motives of the murder range from parking … [Read more...] about Media creates Islamophobia hype
Climate change is real as hail
By Jacob Collins |Asst. Online Editor| Climate Change is happening whether or not you choose to believe in it. Climate change is no longer disputed in the scientific community and there is a general consensus that climate change is happening. The National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), among other major scientific bodies, have all announced their assurance that climate change is happening with a plethora of evidence to back their findings. According to NASA there is compelling evidence for climate change including the fact that the sea level has risen by 6.7 inches over the last century. The sea level rise … [Read more...] about Climate change is real as hail
Anti-vaccine may be dangerous
By Jacob Collins |Asst. Online Editor| The anti-vaccine movement is one that will only serve as a threat to public health and well-being. The movement stems from a study conducted by Andrew Wakefield in 1998 which attempted to link the Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR) vaccine to autism. The study has been retracted from medical literature and, according to Business Insider, the study was conducted with only 12 subjects, all of which were not randomly selected but assembled. Several large-scale studies have attempted to recreate Wakefield’s results, one of which was a Danish study involving almost half a million children, but there has still been no link between vaccines and … [Read more...] about Anti-vaccine may be dangerous
War on drugs proves costly
By Jacob Collins |Asst. Online Editor| The war on drugs is a miserable failure that shows no sign of ever coming to an end. A 2013 study by Rasmussen Reports showed that 82 percent of Americans think the U.S. is not winning the drug war. Since the beginning of the drug war in 1971, under the Nixon administration, the U.S. has spent over one trillion dollars, according to CNN. The U.S. has the highest incarceration rate per capita in the world, according to prb.com. Meanwhile, the violent crime rate has been at its lowest since 1978, according to Time magazine. The drug war is not only a war against an undefeatable enemy, much like the prohibition, but has cost our … [Read more...] about War on drugs proves costly
