America made their choice: Donald Trump wins the 2016 presidential election

November 14, 2016 by Israel Ramirez 5 Comments

By Israel Ramirez |Staff Writer| This years historic election is in the books. The election saw Trump defeat Clinton by a difference of 58 electoral votes leaving the four-decade New York politician with only 218 votes, and 276 in favor of the New York businessman, Donald Trump. “I feel betrayed by the nation. Over and over again we’re told that racism isn’t a thing anymore, that sexism was overcome years ago, and that we’re all equal. But, the results show the complete opposite, I feel that the nation embraced trumps bigotry and in return millions of people of color, women, and immigrants woke up in fear today,” said local resident Erika Anaya. In the past year this election … [Read more...] about America made their choice: Donald Trump wins the 2016 presidential election

Taking Steps Towards Progress

October 24, 2016 by Israel Ramirez 6 Comments

By Israel Ramirez |Staff Writer| After surpassing Chicago as the deadliest city in the nation, San Bernardino is taking steps towards becoming the strong middle-class city it once was. The police department has started many community meetings to interact with the residents regarding questions and concerns about the city. “The city of San Bernardino should host more events, meetings, organizations for the community as well as, adding on to their police force since we’ve seen a rise in homicides as of late,” said student Guillermo Corona. For some time, the police department has been hosting "Coffee with a Cop (CWAC),". Beginning back in 2011 in the city of Hawthorne, CA, CWAC  … [Read more...] about Taking Steps Towards Progress

San Bernardino tops Chicago as Deadliest City in the U.S.

October 8, 2016 by Israel Ramirez 8 Comments

By Israel Ramirez |Staff Writer| The city of San Bernardino has surpassed the city of Chicago as the deadliest city in the U.S. Chicago being amongst the three largest cities in the nation is also amongst the top of the list in homicides per year, but is shunned by San Bernardino’s homicide ratio with less than a quarter of Chicago’s population. Having an approximate population of only 216,000 inhabitants, San Bernardino has already seen as much as 50 homicides as October arises, topping Chicago as the deadliest city in the nation according to CBS Los Angeles. If these homicide rates continue, San Bernardino would end the year with a homicide rate of 31 per 100,000 residents, … [Read more...] about San Bernardino tops Chicago as Deadliest City in the U.S.

Two-year college over a four-year

June 9, 2016 by Israel Ramirez 943 Comments

By Israel Ramirez |Staff Writer| While many students are eligible to attend a four-year university after finishing high-school, students should choose to attend a two-year first. According to the CSUSB financial aid office website, it will cost a total of $23,607 to attend and live at the university per year. On the other hand, according to campusexplorer.com, it would only cost $3,079 to attend Riverside Community College (RCC). The price gap is far from unnoticeable for a student who just graduated high-school. Community college is a great alternative to avoid large amounts of debt while also preparing yourself in an environment that I think is better than a four-year college. "I … [Read more...] about Two-year college over a four-year

Women who curse are attractive

June 9, 2016 by Israel Ramirez 655 Comments

By Israel Ramirez |Staff Writer| Cursing has become a part of everyday language for many of us. Many argue that women should not curse or swear because it is not lady-like. I argue that if you want to drop the f-bomb, then do it! It is very attractive to me to see or hear women go against traditional standards. Traditional standards meaning: how to act and speak befittingly in private and public settings. I mean, come on, we are in the 21st century; There is nothing more attractive than a woman who speaks her mind. My only recommendation is to just curse with caution, but still make sure to express yourself in a way that indicates, "this is who I am, and nothing can change me." The … [Read more...] about Women who curse are attractive

Our generation has much to offer

June 9, 2016 by Israel Ramirez 164 Comments

By Israel Ramirez |Staff Writer| The Millennials, often criticized by our previous generation, have proven much more than what we are credited for. Our predecessors criticize our generation in the same way the baby boomers criticized Generation X and how our generation has moved on to criticize the boomlets. Often, we hear that our generation is "lazy," "unmotivated" or "stupid." It is not that we intentionally portray any of those characteristics; instead it is the changes that we have incorporated that cause our antecedent’s trouble. "To older workers, wanting help looks like laziness; to younger workers, the gains that come from teamwork have been learned from the collaborative … [Read more...] about Our generation has much to offer

War at 18, smoke at 21

May 17, 2016 by Israel Ramirez 8 Comments

By Israel Ramirez |Staff Writer| Increasing the smoking age, from 18 to 21, is outrageous because it limits personal freedom. Many would argue that an 18-year-old is not old enough to make the decision whether he/she should smoke or not. I argue that if they are old enough for the country to ship them off to war, then they are prepared to make their own choices. Maybe it would be an even better idea to raise the age requirement to enlist for the selective service from 18 to 21. I agree with Gov. Jerry Brown’s decision to raise the smoking age to reduce the health issues caused by it. However, with the decision 18-year-olds are already able to make, I think increasing the age of smoking … [Read more...] about War at 18, smoke at 21
