Ignorance is Bliss

November 28, 2016 by Geraldine Carrillo Leave a Comment

By Geraldine Carrillo |Staff Writer| If your boyfriend was cheating on you at this very moment would you want to know, or would you rather cover your ears, eyes and mouth to keep peace in mind? "Ignorance is bliss" a phrase that people use to refrain getting hurt or avoid the simple truth. As crazy as this sounds, ignorance is one of the most common methods people use to avoid conflict or problems in their life. "When I hear 'ignorance is bliss,' I think of ignorant people that hide from the truth," said student Ana Jacobo. Although it is something that can be seen negatively to some people, avoiding the feelings of having your heart broken when being cheated on would justify … [Read more...] about Ignorance is Bliss

Food and The Government

November 22, 2016 by Geraldine Carrillo Leave a Comment

By Geraldine Carrillo |Staff Writer| Government control has been far too expensive and now they want to control how we eat by implementing something called “fat taxes.”  These taxes will charge a higher rate on fast food and un-nutritional food that we consume and consider cheap. Obesity is costing the government billions of dollars, but is it fair that the government is invading personal choices of citizens? Government should not limit our personal choices, it should be up to the individual to have the responsibility of choosing healthy foods vs. fast foods. “There is no reason why the government should charge us more on fast food, it's a personal choice, if I want to get a … [Read more...] about Food and The Government

Till swiping left do us part

November 14, 2016 by Geraldine Carrillo Leave a Comment

By Geraldine Carrillo |Staff Writer| We swipe right if the person is attractive. Later, a conversation strikes by an instant message notification with a goal - a one night stand, or a long term relationship. The way we communicate with others has not only changed our way of living, but also our way of loving. Is it courtship, love or just simply sex? Finding the right person for the right reason is what makes these dating sites and apps a bit foggy and misleading. “I have used a couple of dating sites maybe twice or three times, I don't go on there to find love, I honestly just go to have a good night or hook up,” said student Jose Arellano. Although some people do think … [Read more...] about Till swiping left do us part

Social media leads to hate crimes

October 31, 2016 by Geraldine Carrillo Leave a Comment

By Geraldine Carrillo |Staff Writer| "There is going to be a fight today after school on Walnut St.," was a post on Facebook from one of my friends during my sophomore year of high school. Soon after this post, other students then replied with the location and time of the fight on social media to create an audience for that fight as an amusement to go watch. This made safety patrols aware, which led to a raid by police. Keeping an eye on social media has been a good way to prevent hate crimes throughout the new digital era. But the extent to which it has been utilized is ridiculous compared to the hike in the number of committed crimes. Hate crime is a crime motivated by … [Read more...] about Social media leads to hate crimes

Parents guilt trip children to go to college

October 24, 2016 by Geraldine Carrillo Leave a Comment

By Geraldine Carrillo |Staff Writer| Growing up we have all  heard the phrase, “You have way more opportunities now than we ever had when we were younger.” This version of "guilt trip" tactic is an effective way parents are getting their children to go to college. Parents mean well and always want the best for their children. They believe that having a stable job can lead to having a good life almost ensuring that possibility. I strongly believe parents have one major goal; which is to get their child to attend college to provide a long fulfilling career. Whether one may or may not agree with that tactic, it is a smart way to get more people to go to college. My parents have … [Read more...] about Parents guilt trip children to go to college

Interest in Celebrity News

October 16, 2016 by Geraldine Carrillo Leave a Comment

By Geraldine Carrillo |Staff Writer| Our society, probably too caught up in how the next season of “Love & Hip-hop,” is never concerned about important news pieces hidden behind close doors. European Scientific Journal concludes 9/11 was a controlled demolition, yet we are more concerned about Kim Kardashian getting robbed at a hotel. We, are in a culture where celebrity news is becoming as, or maybe more important than daily news. TMZ’s site, reaches over 27 million viewers, While CBS’s news reaches mere 4.7 million people monthly in the U.S The U.S stands strong with almost 76 percent of views according to the Quantcast website. People are far more interested in watching … [Read more...] about Interest in Celebrity News

Are Parking Permits at CSUSB too expensive?

October 8, 2016 by Geraldine Carrillo Leave a Comment

By Geraldine Carrillo |Staff writer| As I am arriving at the parking lot I consider myself a fisherman, ready to catch the next student heading to his/her car for a parking spot. Circles and circles, I am waiting for that one fish that will generously catch the bait I have been holding in my fishing rod for such a long time now. I’m 15 minutes late to class, frustrated and annoyed I look at my mirror and after 40 minutes of fishing I finally see a fish that is coming my way! At last! When driving in CSUSB parking lots, do you ever ask yourself, why are we as a student body, paying for something so expensive like parking permits when it takes me so long to park? “The cost for … [Read more...] about Are Parking Permits at CSUSB too expensive?
