April 17, 2019 by Dusty Alexander 115 Comments

As if no one is watching, a high school freshman stuffs extra lunch portions into his backpack. The staff of Entrepreneur High School does notice his actions.  The young man explains that the reason he is stealing the food is so he can bring it back home to his little sister so she can have dinner that night. Rather than punish or scold the kid, the staff member tells him to take more food home with him so he and his sister can eat. The children at this school are given a full range of support, from three meals a day to after-school programs completely free of charge. “These are low-income kids coming from traumatic homes and traumatic experiences, so you have to take that and … [Read more...] about Entrepreneuring the future

February 27, 2019 by Dusty Alexander 260 Comments

The rise of housing costs for students of CSUSB is one of the factors leading to a higher rate of homelessness for students here, commented Madeline Zhuo, an employee at a food pantry, in response to the topics raised by the rally in Sacramento. On Feb. 20 student leaders, college executives, and legislators rallied at the state capital for financial aid reform to combat food insecurity, lack of shelter, and wellbeing issues that plague California college students. Mia Kagianas, president of the Cal State Student Association, struck at the heart of the issue during her opening remarks. “Our state and our nation are experiencing a higher education renaissance,” Kagianas said. “Issues … [Read more...] about Students, Administrators, and Legislators Rally to Fix Financial Aid

February 13, 2019 by Dusty Alexander 168 Comments

Students, staff, and faculty alike learned of the dire need for civilized, respectful conversation during a post-screening discussion on the new documentary "King in the Wilderness" on Feb. 12. The film, about the last three years of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life, focused on Dr. King's challenges when moving his civil rights movement up North into Chicago, mitigating his movement of nonviolence with the ongoing Vietnam War, and working on the foundation of The Poor People's Campaign. However, the documentary also focused on the differences in views between King and fellow activists of the time, namely Stokely Carmichael, who did not feel as strongly about Dr. King's message of … [Read more...] about Screening and Discussion: “King in the Wilderness”

It is imperative that students be aware of the resources available to them; especially since these resources, like Family Pact, are free of charge.
