Follow CSUSB Professor Dr. Mary Fong as she reflects on her first 27 years of life through ups and downs as she embarks on cultural, intercultural, and spiritual journies in her recently published memoir, Two Heart Nuts to Crack! Human Trafficking Awareness Day at CSUSB

In honor of January's National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, the Osher Adult Re-entry Center (OARC), VOICE, and ASI at CSUSB teamed up with Coalition Against Sexual Exploitation (CASE) and held workshops, a panel, discussion, film screening and guest speaker session at the San Manuel Student Union (SMSU) Theater Jan. 24. Held as part of Human Trafficking Awareness Week, which included iEmpathize Apathy Effect Exhibit to showcase real-life artifacts of children victims as well as a Walk Against Human Trafficking, the event kicked off with the introduction of the event, followed by the workshop on rape and trauma. Closing off with dignity

The Social and Behavioral Sciences Anthropology Museum closed off its nearly year-long exhibit on dismantling intolerance, In|Dignity, with a special performance and reception on December 15. There are also plans to publish the exhibit as a book and be made accessible to high school and college students. As the publishing process is underway, the purpose of the text would be similar to that of the exhibit; to learn and understand the diversity of the human experience. San Bernardino students prepare for college and take on its challenges with the help of GEAR UP at CSUSB. The program's Director, Summer Steele, provides an insight into the program, students, plans and future of the program. GEAR UP at CSUSB is a federal grant program awarded by the Department of Education. The six-year program provides exclusive services for college preparedness and postsecondary education success to students of San Bernardino Unified School District (SBUSD), specifically the class of 2020. Grace and Justice: Human Trafficking in the Inland Empire

CSUSB Assistant Professor, Dr. Julie Taylor explained how the U.S. policy affects survivors of prostitution and human trafficking at the Grace and Justice event in Riverside. Guest speakers of various professional backgrounds held discussions on human trafficking issues such as pimp recruiting and selling, victimization, healthcare, nursing implications and challenges for law enforcement, among others. Suicide Watchmen Rally at Red Hill Park

The Inland Empire Initiative for Suicide Prevention and Awareness was held Saturday, Oct. 27 at Red Hill Park in Rancho Cucamonga by a Christian-based organization known as the Suicide Watchmen Prayer Team. The focus of the rally was to break the silence and stigma regarding suicide in the community. Spoken word poetry, music, art and educational flyers on suicide were provided for guests throughout the event. Certain obstacles did not allow the group to host the event during September, which is nationally recognized to be Suicide Prevention Month. #JourneyToSafety – intersections of domestic violence & immigration

  Today’s ongoing immigration policies not only target migrants that live in or journey to the US, but also target individuals caught in domestic violence situations who cannot report their abuse due to their immigration status and fear of deportation. A workshop titled “#JourneyToSafety – Intersections of Domestic Violence and Immigration” was held at the San Manuel Student Union (SMSU) Fourplex on Oct. 25 to inform students of the ongoing social justice issue. Fontana Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Residents of Fontana gathered at Miller Park Amphitheater for La Gran Fiesta on Oct. 6th to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The event was free and open to the public. California is a highly diverse state and many people of diverse backgrounds attended the event with their friends and families. Guests of the event were able to enjoy various styles of Spanish music and live entertainment from Como La Flor Band: A Tribute to Selena, Orgullo Mestizo Folk Ballet, Evie Dance Studio, and Marimba Tropical. Local artists from various areas in southern California were at the event to display and sell their art inspired by Latino culture. Air quality conditions worsen in the Inland Empire due to various environmental pollutants that could cause harm to inhabitants of the area. Major cities in the area include: San Bernardino, Riverside, Ontario, and Palm Springs. Air quality is defined as the the degree to which the air has been polluted by various harmful sources, either man-made or biological contaminants that float into the atmosphere. These are measured everyday with various, highly technological tools used by major organizations to study and record air quality data.
