By Wendy Wheeler and Amy Neault The Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) Program Board helped students de-stress by hosting the Paint and Sip event in the Bay. This event is about painting an image whilst an instructor directs the painting session and everyone sips on a beverage. Hence, ‘Paint and Sip.’ Monica McMahon, Program Board Coordinator, said the event is held quarterly and originally started in the Winter quarter of 2017. “This initially was meant to be a one time event, but students loved it and it took off!” The event offers students the opportunity for an hour of relaxation. For those interested in playing cards, Tarot brings a whole new definition to the world of playing cards. On January 28, 2020, the Interfaith Center held an event from 12 to 2 p.m. called Tarot Tuesday that was led by Psychic Melina Reyes. This event was only two hours, which seems like a lot, but the first hour was an informational session on tarot cards and the history of them. The second hour was Reyes offering tarot readings, which thirty students signed up for. Due to the limited amount of time remaining, Reyes performed eleven readings. On January 23, 2020, CSUSB’s Transgender and Queer Resource Center held an event called Queeroake in SMSU Bay from 6-9 pm. Queeraoke is an annual event that happens every Fall quarter here on campus. However, this year the event was held during the Winter Quarter instead, due collectively to all of the weather based campus closures CSUSB had during the Fall quarter. Auditions were held for the CSUSB production of Vagina Monologues. These auditions occurred on Tuesday, January 21, and were offered exclusively to CSUSB affiliates. It was conducted by Assistant Director, Jacob Chacko; Student Programming Assistant of the San Manuel Student Union (SMSU) Women’s Resource Center, Starr Booth; and fellow student associates of the SMSU Women's Resource Center. Vagina Monologues has become a tradition here at CSUSB, as the production is performed annually on campus. The Self-Defense and Pepper Spray Training, held by the Women’s Resource Center, was a two-hour workshop aimed to practice and enhance individuals' self-defense skills, so they can safer on and off campus. The training took place on Thursday, January 23, in SMSU Fourplex 218, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Lizett Estrada, the Student Assistant for the Women’s Resource Center, said she “wanted to provide a resource for those who felt like they do not know how to protect themselves." Estrada is a second-year student Health Science major who led the event. She explained that her inspiration for the event was because of her own inexperience with self-defense techniques.
