A man was arrested for assaulting a woman and stealing several items from people at the Church Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, according to campus police.
The date reported of this crime alert was on Sept. 19, 2011 at 6:40 a.m.. The man allegedly behind this crime is Bruce Eddie Carrell, who is an African American adult. The crime reported was an assault with a deadly weapon at 1475 W. Northpark Blvd. in San Bernardino.
“I was shocked when I heard what had happened on this campus, so close to home.” said Jessica Moore, a resident at CSUSB.
One of the church staff members reported that a juvenile had property stolen from their backpack at 6:40 a.m. Sept. 19th 2011.
On Sept. 21, 2011, the suspect Carrell was arrested around 1:00 p.m. by the University police department’s Detective Herrington. Detective Herrington located the suspect in a nearby neighborhood and took him into custody.
Detective Herrington believes the campus is a better place now that the suspect is in custody.
The police department also released a statement: “The University police department takes all crime on or around campus very seriously. With this case, we had a person who willingly set out to hurt another person. He needed to be taken off the streets. The goal was to take him into custody before the fall semester started. Thanks to the team work between our officers, we accomplished our goal. It feels very good.”
Before attending the school, students have the right to an orientation and are told that the campus is one of the safest CSUs. “When I heard about the crime I was alerted and I will be prepared for the unexpected. No telling when something like this will happen again.” said Kameo Clyne, a resident at CSUSB.
The Church is located on Northpark Boulevard where students are always walking to and from school, whether it is walking to Cajon High School or CSUSB.
This crime wasn’t the first one to occur and surely will not be the last. Be aware of your surroundings and always be prepared because no telling when the next time a crime like this will take place.
CSUSB is a safe and protected University, the police department is located on the far North West side of the campus with a 24-hour patrol and dispatch. The police department wants the people to know if you’re around campus and feel something is wrong you can use the emergency towers that are around the campus by pressing the red button that will connect you to the dispatch.
