Vox Pop: Is campus parking getting out of hand?

November 8, 2019 by Tanya Jansen 446 Comments

Prices are up and so are wait times. Construction, growing student body, increase in parking prices, and the start of the fall quarter are all reasons why parking has become an issue for students. Students share their growing frustrations and suggestions for change.

Sephora Navarro, 4th Year, History Major, Math Minor

“There was already difficulty parking before they started construction, and now that there’s construction everywhere. There isn’t anywhere to park. Now you have to go all the way to the Visual Arts. It’s just a drag. Just maybe have it be more accessible because I know there is parking all around, but maybe people don’t have the time. Say, if they have a class in Jack Brown, they don’t have the time to park all the way in Visual Arts. You know, maybe expanding parking.”

Ruby Villasenor, 3rd Year, Communications Major

“They are very expensive. Like I said, I’m comparing everything to the community level because that’s where I am from. The only problem is the pricing. If there could be something with a change that would be great. And I am also looking to carpool with someone next quarter ‘cause it is pricy!”

Bernard Pantoja 3rd Year, Physics Major

“I think it’s pretty easy to find if you come early, before 8 o’clock, ‘cause after, it gets swamped in the front. I appreciate the people who help you unlock your car when you leave your keys in the car.”

John Grandorf, 4th Year, Finances Major

“I might have to park in the back but there are always open spaces. So, I see all these people complaining on Twitter and having a tantrum over nothing I mean, just go to another parking lot. And don’t forget that people can get guided assistance to their cars. A lot of people don’t know that.”

Sean Akins, 3rd Year, Computer Systems and Game Development Major

“I’d say that it’s really difficult to find parking, it really is. There’s a certain time that you have to come on campus to be here to get the parking spot that you want.  We’re paying $100 every three months. I wish it was maybe like $90, you know $30 every month you are here. I think that’s fair.

Alex Diez, 3rd Year, English Major

“If it’s an 8 a.m. class, it’s fine. But if it’s later, it really sucks. And I would just build more parking spots. Stop building these buildings and start building more parking spots.”

Danny Carbajal, 3rd Year, Biology Major

“They’re pretty expensive. But I mean, compared to what I was paying at my other school, it’s a huge difference. I think I was only paying like 50 bucks, whereas I’m paying double that, almost triple.”

Angelica Rea, 1st Year, Sociology Major

“I think the only thing I would change is the prices. Oh my god, too expensive. Too much money.”

Isabell Trancoso, 3rd Year, Anthropology Major

“I think it’s very hectic if you don’t get here early. When I have 10:00 a.m. classes, it’s hard to find parking. I would probably change having to pay for parking. I think it’s stupid. I mean, we’re already paying to go to school we shouldn’t have to pay for parking.”

Monice Smith, 3rd Year, Biology Major

“It definitely has it’s up and downs. I can get parking at night I can get parking in the morning, but I hate coming in the afternoon because literally every spot is taken. Everybody is fighting for that one spot that’s gonna be open. I think they’re definitely overpriced. I shouldn’t be paying $115 every quarter for a parking spot I already pay to go to school at. So, I think that’s ridiculous.”

Ryan McFarland, Credential Program

“If you buy annually, you’re not saving money. If you do the math on it I don’t think you’re saving anything at all so it doesn’t make sense to buy annually. My experience has been alright, it’s been whatever. You know, it’s college parking. But for the most part, it’s been good. If anything, it could be better.”

Giovanni Orijuela, 4th Year, Computer Science and Game Development Dual Major

“I feel like it’s okay whenever it isn’t a new time or something like that. At peak hours I have to park pretty far to find a good spot.”

Fanny Duran, 3rd Year, Human Development Major

“I usually get here early in the morning so I’m able to get good parking. But pricing is a little too much. But other than that, it’s good.”

Sean Bell, Single Subject Credential, Grad Student

“I think they’re too expensive, but they’re on par with every other school.”

Savanna Trombetta, 4th Year, Social Sciences

“I actually live on campus but even as an on-campus student I experience a lot of parking issues. I think the price should accommodate more and it doesn’t. I have an issue with the tickets and the way they give tickets and how you can’t contest it. I think that’s really unreasonable.”

Chiduito Treasure Agbakwuru, 4th Year, Health Science Major

“It takes me, sometimes, like an hour driving around to find parking. And I end up having to give in and park somewhere super far away from my class. We’re paying for parking and we can’t even find parking.”
