The 2014 MTV (European Music Awards (EMAs) aired on Sunday, Nov. 9, in Glasgow, Scotland and did not disappoint, providing viewers with yet another entertaining and controversial award show.
This was the 20th annual EMA’s. It began in 1994 in Berlin, Germany and is hosted in a different European country every year.
This award show began primarily as an alternative to the infamous VMA’s, and although some worldwide nominations have been added, the main categories consist mainly of popular American artists.
Nicki Minaj hosted this years EMA’s. Most people know her as the risqué singer/rapper who never stops surprising us, either with her crazy appearances or with her over-the-top personality.
She did a great job hosting, keeping the audience entertained with her sassy, comedic comments, but also turned off some with her multiple outfit changes, consisting of very revealing clothing.
Aside from her skimpy outfits, Minaj won an award, played golf onstage, sang along with the audience, and made sure there was never a dull moment.
She also performed a unique, jaw-dropping opening act and performed some of her famous songs, including her latest single, “Anaconda”.
Some of the other highly buzzed-about performances were Ariana Grande performing “Break Free,” Alicia Keys playing piano and rocking out with her baby bump, and other performers, including Nick Jonas, Enrique Inglesias, Bono, Ed Sheeran, Slash, and many more.
The night was full of show-stopping performances.
There were a lot of famous EMA presenters and winners as well, some of whom deserved to win, while others who, in my opinion, beat out much better candidates.
Some of the biggest wins included Katy Perry for both Best Video and Best Look, Justin Bieber for Best Male, One direction for Best Pop and Biggest Fans, Ariana Grande for Best Female, Ozzy Ozbourne for the Global Icon award, as well as many others.
I personally feel that some of the veteran artists should have won over the newbies; however, popularity generally overrules hard work and talent.
On another note, all of the winners won fair and square, and I can appreciate anytime someone’s passion, time and effort are recognized and awarded.
Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, One direction, and 5 Seconds of Summer all appeared to be the biggest winners of the night, each winning 2-3 awards.
My favorite moments of the night were the different performances, some old and some new, the tribute to Ozzy Ozbourne, and all of the acceptance speeches.
Overall, it was a very organized award show with a fun host, entertaining performances, and memorable moments that will probably have people talking for quite some time.
