Protect Yourself: Cautionary Tale

May 31, 2017 by Elizabeth Taylor 42 Comments

By Elizabeth Taylor |Staff Writer| With almost a decade gone by and still no changes are being implemented, I feel that it is only necessary that I share with you a story that could change or even possibly save a life. Nothing can prepare oneself for the oncoming of bad news; it’s obvious the news is bad because eyes are overwhelmed with tears on the brink of explosion, the head is low and a weak voice struggling to let out the terror that haunts her. I like to think of myself as a strong woman, someone my kids can look up and be proud to call me their mom; but nothing has ever tested the strength of my will like the day my mom told me she was raped. Shock—How could this of … [Read more...] about Protect Yourself: Cautionary Tale

Sexual consent should be taught at all education levels

October 24, 2015 by Archived posts 3 Comments

By Cherae Hunt |Staff Writer| I was raped by my ex-boyfriend two years ago when we were still together. I never felt so used and disgusted with myself in my life, and it still affects me today. I think the importance of sexual consent should be taught nationwide from middle school to undergraduate college students. "Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill into law that makes California the first in the nation to have a clear definition of when people agree to sex. The law goes further than the common 'no means no' standard, which has been blamed for bringing ambiguity into investigations of sexual assault cases. The law will be taught at the high school and college level," according … [Read more...] about Sexual consent should be taught at all education levels

Victim blaming is outrageous

November 26, 2014 by Archived posts 6 Comments

By Erica Wong |Staff Writer| CNN’s Don Lemon faced biting criticism after asking an alleged Bill Cosby sexual assault victim why she didn’t, “use her teeth as a weapon,” later directly stating “biting” as a way to prevent the oral rape. The awkward exchange between Lemon and Joan Tarshis began with Lemon excusing himself for being “crude” but continuing on anyway, saying. “You know, there are ways not to perform oral sex if you didn’t want to do it.” The uncomfortable question that Lemon “had to ask” Tarshis implies that rape victims are capable of preventing their situation. Twitter users began trending #DonLemonReporting, making ridiculous suggestions like: “But did the towers … [Read more...] about Victim blaming is outrageous

“Rape culture” is unaccaptable

October 11, 2014 by Archived posts 9 Comments

By Stephanie Woodward |Staff Writer| College campuses need to help make their students feel safe and comfortable about coming forward and reporting sexual assault. The number of reported sexual assaults on college campuses increased from an average 12 in 2011 to 20 in 2013, according to an America Tonight analysis of campus crime statistics. Emma Sulkowicz, a visual arts senior at Columbia University, claimed she was sexually assaulted in her dorm room two years ago. Sulkowicz has vowed to carry a twin-sized mattress for her senior thesis project all over campus until her alleged attacker, another student, is expelled, prosecuted, or chooses to leave on his own. Sexual assaults in the military are becoming to prevalent for comfort

May 24, 2013 by Archived posts 39 Comments

By Lynn Post |Staff Writer| A person’s worst fear about joining the military is the possibility of getting injured or killed in battle, but a more common disaster being made apparent through recent news coverage is the possibility of getting sexually assaulted. As a soldier, your goal is to serve your country and help keep your friends and family safe from attacks. You enlist and work hard to move up the ranks and do the best job you can, but with the new statistics surrounding rape, enlisting in the military has more cause for caution. The percentage of rape in the military has increased by 73 percent from 2010 to 2012 according to a report released by The Pentagon on May … [Read more...] about Sexual assaults in the military are becoming to prevalent for comfort

April 25, 2013 by Archived posts 167 Comments

By Phil Ruddle |Staff Writer| How safe do you feel when walking around campus at night? Do you often get that feeling that someone is following you? Or that the worst imaginable is about about to happen? If so, are you aware that there have been multiple instances of crime at our campus every single month? And these are just crimes that were reported. There is an interesting feature on our campus website that perhaps not all students know about. There you can find that the campus police have a map of the campus titled Crime Map which designates all of the different crimes that took place throughout the month. It allows you to look at every single month from April 2013 back … [Read more...] about Part 1 of 2: Crime map shows danger zones
