They started their season off at the Cal Baptist Invite this past September and racked up enough points to take fourth place with 68 points. Top runner Laurea Aceves crossed the finish line in second place with five fellow teammates placing in the top twenty behind her. Aceves ran the 4000-meter course in 14:22. "But really I learned that everyone is a piece for the of the puzzle, in order to get to the final goal it requires everyone's dedication and efforts," continued Cortez. There are a total of 12 seniors on the CSUSB women's track and field team, all of which have helped mold each other into more than just a normal team. “I will miss being on a team and getting to be a part of something bigger than me,” said Cara Bonafede. CCAA Track Meet Aceves and Watson shine
By Shanna Shurnaman |Staff Writer| The CSUSB women's track and field team competed at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Conference Championships from May 4 to May 7. All sprints, relay and field events competed in prelims while all distance events went straight to finals. In the 3000-meter Steeplechase, Laura Aceves ran a new personal record (PR) of 10:37.54, earning herself a second place finish and a spot at Nationals. “I was excited and a little bit nervous but confident of myself,” said Aceves. “I knew I would have good competition that would help me to PR," continued Aceves. The day was hot, but the 'Yotes ran hard to get their last minute qualifying marks in. Field event prelims began on April 22. Finals for field and track events took place on April 23. In shot put, Coyote Simone Everett threw 10.54 meters, not far off of her personal record of 10.69. The 1500-meters was the first event on the track where team captain Patricia “Patty” Cortez ran a 4:39.97 in heat two, earning herself a second place finish. Track has success at Pomona-Pitzer Invitational
By Shanna Shernaman |Staff Writer| CSUSB Women’s Track and Field competed at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on March 9. It was a rainy day, but that didn’t stop the Coyotes from taking the field. The Coyotes had a successful day starting with the women’s 5000-meters “B” race, where athletes Cara Bonafede and Elizabeth “Lizard” Hernandez brought the Coyotes in with a great finish. Bonafede finished fifth with a Personal Record (PR) of 19:22 and Hernandez followed shortly behind in seventh with 19:34, beating her previous record by 51 seconds. By Ricardo Mendez IStaff Writer| Jackeline Felix, a senior kinesiology major from Fontana, has plenty of experience as she competed in track and field all four years in high school, where she was awarded all-Sunkist league honors. At her high school, Felix was named MVP for not only cross country but track distance as well. "It's such a big influence in the Inland Empire," said Team Captain Felix. Now track and field practices is six times a week. Practice was held Wednesday afternoon with up to 55-mph wind conditions. Cross Country finishes at eighth place in CCAA Championship
By Mike Sessions |Staff Writer| At Hooker Oak Park’s six kilometer run, the Coyotes had one thing and one thing only on their mind, and that was first place at the CCAA Championship event. It can be a very intimidating environment seeing as the host Chico State has won the CCAA title six consecutive times, and the fact that they’re ranked seventh in the nation. With the champions lingering in the air being thinner than usual, the Coyotes were up to the challenge. However, so were the other CCAA opponents, bringing CSUSB to eighth place by the end of the event after a total score of 183. Coyotes sprint towards second best finish ever

The team earned its second best finish in school history, but they’re losing senior runner Katherine Gomez, an extremely valuable part of the team. "She’s been with the team for two years and it will be difficult to replace her leadership and talent. But it’s exciting to see her move on with her career and education," says Coach Tom Burleson, who just ended his 22nd season as head coach of cross country.
