Opinion: Thoughts on toxic masculinity

November 3, 2020 by Colin Pedersen 1,016 Comments

The notion of toxic masculinity is gaining more prominence these days and I think it often gets misconstrued as some sort of attack on men. I used to see it this way, but I feel like I can help bridge the gap that might exist for those who are still opposed to the existence of the term. The first point I wish to touch on is that we first have to stop solely associating the concept of masculinity with men because any individual can exhibit masculine behavior or traits even if it is more common among men for biological reasons. However, the reason this point is so important is because it allows us to realize that toxic masculinity can be practiced by anyone, although it is predominantly a … [Read more...] about Opinion: Thoughts on toxic masculinity

November 27, 2019 by Adrian Barajas 12 Comments

By Charlotte Iradjpanah   Twas the night before Congress, And throughout the White House, The whole place was vacant, Except for the louse.   The chefs and the ushers, And tailors and maids, Were tired of working, Without getting paid.   The Potomac was frozen, As thick as can be, No worker there, To collect passage fees.   With Cohen admitting, And Flynn having lied, Natalia, the Russian, May have just been a spy!   When all of a sudden, Word arose, Trump had been talking, Behind private doors.   Pence as his vice, Was in such a mess, And too damn embarrassed, To make an … [Read more...] about Expressions: The Fallen Holiday Angel

OPINION: Defunding Planned Parenthood does not defund abortion

February 27, 2017 by Brittanie Gutierrez 2 Comments

By Lost Girl Planned Parenthood defunding threats from the Republican Party are growing and people are not happy. Threats to defund Planned Parenthood (PP) have grown more serious, now that the party controls both the Senate and House. During a CNN Town Hall meeting in January, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan made comments regarding his stance on PP. “We don’t want to commit taxpayer funding for abortion, and Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider,” said Ryan. Now let’s get factual. PP does receive federal funding. The $500 million collected a year, comes mostly from Medicaid and Title X, but by law, federal funding cannot contribute to abortions. “The … [Read more...] about OPINION: Defunding Planned Parenthood does not defund abortion

Young adults at risk

June 9, 2016 by Archived posts 5 Comments

By Estefania Torres |Asst. A&E Editor| Underage drinking happens more then we would like to think it does on school campuses. College is often the most common place where young adults experiment with this substance. That is why it is crucial for housing staff to forbid alcohol in a student’s dorm room or apartment. "About four out of five drink alcohol...the negative impact on alcohol use on college campuses are wide spread and each year, drinking impacts thousands of college students," according to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. We have students of all ages living on campus, some over the age of 21, but many are still minors and are forbidden to drink by … [Read more...] about Young adults at risk

Free the Nipple for the gender equality

May 28, 2015 by Brittanie Gutierrez 65 Comments

By Brittanie Gutierrez |Staff Writer| In my opinion, both women and men have to take notice of the "Free the Nipple" movement because it is not about nudity, but rather gender equality. "Free The Nipple" is a documentary and a social movement created to, "stand against female oppression and censorship, both in the United States and around the globe," according to freethenipple.com. The new feminist campaign has popped up on timelines and feeds everywhere with celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Cara Delevingne promoting it. We see advertisements and other forms of media featuring shirtless men standing on the beach, working out and barbecuing without a care in the world. Abercrombie … [Read more...] about Free the Nipple for the gender equality

Financial aid website review

May 24, 2014 by Archived posts 635 Comments

By Emmanuel Gutierrez |Staff Writer| The CSUSB financial aid website is too simple for its own good and potentially serves as a barrier to receive department guidance. The cost of attending higher education continues to increase. Receiving financial aid is becoming more and more crucial. “The website was kind of helpful, but calling the office and talking to someone was easier,” said CSUSB student Christen Jennings. “Put more info on the website so I won’t have to spend extra time on hold,” added Jennings. The information provided on the CSUSB financial aid website is thorough in covering topics such as applying for aid, Dream Act information, and links to student … [Read more...] about Financial aid website review

Pointers for student budgeting

April 13, 2014 by Archived posts 498 Comments

By Mark Mascetti |Staff Writer| Students often struggle financially with the extra financial burden of books, food, parking permits and gasoline. Students at four-year public universities spend on average $1,200 per year on textbooks, according to collegeboard.org. However, there are small steps students can take to save money. I would recommend switching to online and e-book edition textbooks as they are becoming more popular and cheaper in comparison to the traditional versions. “I like Kindle books because they are a lot more affordable and you can rent them for only a few months at a time and that’s all you have to pay for,” said Sondra Riehart, a CSUSB public … [Read more...] about Pointers for student budgeting

Interracial dating is a good thing and should be more prominent on campus

February 15, 2013 by Archived posts 70 Comments

By Angelice Romero |Staff Writer| Apparently there are not as many interracial couples in the San Bernardino county and at CSUSB. I heard it was partially because people like to stick to their own, although San Bernardino is a racially diverse city. I think people should not rule out dating someone outside their race and everyone should try dating a different ethnicity at least once in their life. Sophomore Sandy Arevalo, feels that dating outside your race is interesting because she gets to learn a different culture. Sandy, who is Mexican-American is currently dating a Caucasian guy. The issue she originally had was the language barrier between her parents and her current … [Read more...] about Interracial dating is a good thing and should be more prominent on campus

Make Puerto Rico the 51st state already, jeez

February 1, 2013 by Archived posts 245 Comments

By Angelice Romero |Staff Writer| It has been 61 years since Puerto Rico became a commonwealth of the United States, so why is it still not a state when it obviously should be? The answer is politics. Being Puerto Rican-American, I see firsthand the struggles Puerto Rico is going through and how becoming a state would benefit us. The education system in Puerto Rico is terrible and lacks major funding. According to The New York Times, riots started because of a 50 percent tuition increase of $800. This not only shows the struggles of the University of Puerto Rico campuses but it also represents the struggle of Puerto Rico and it’s people. The 2010 and 2012 census in Puerto Rico shows … [Read more...] about Make Puerto Rico the 51st state already, jeez

Taking instant gratification to a whole new level

January 22, 2013 by Archived posts 105 Comments

By Angelice Romero |Staff Writer| Our generation has become so dependent on meds that it is becoming an epidemic. To think curing your issues can be done by taking a simple pill is an antiquated process. Have a headache? Can’t sleep? Anxiety ridden? Your kid is too hyper? There’s a pill for all of that. Along with using medication as a cure all, there is a booming trend of abusing these drugs as a form of recreation. With all the medicine out there, people are not handling it properly. Gatherings such as “pharm parties” or “Skittle parties,” where they put all their pills in a bowl and take them at random, have become increasingly popular. According to the US Department of Health … [Read more...] about Taking instant gratification to a whole new level
