The 2019-2020 season for the CSUSB Men’s basketball is primed to be an exciting one for the Coyotes. So far the 2019-2020 Coyotes are 3-1 on the season, with their only blemish coming against Point Loma in the home opener, losing 93-91 before bouncing back against Cal Poly Pomona in the CCAA opener. The Coyotes led most of the game against Point Loma, taking a 53-47 halftime lead and at one point held a 19 point lead. The Sea Lions outscored the Coyotes 46-38 in the second half. After starting the season with a record of 5-2, the Coyotes have fallen to 7-7 and 3-6 in conference games. The season has had its ups and downs due to some significant injuries, and new players getting adjusted to each other, which has led to a season record worse than the team would like to have. Coyote men’s basketball suffers unfortunate loss
By Nathaniel Lastrapes |Staff Writer| Forty minutes were not enough as the Coyotes suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Chico State Wildcats 73-72 on a three-pointer at the buzzer. The Coyotes led 72-70 with 10 seconds remaining in overtime, after Coyote shooting guard, Jacob Thomas, missed a free throw and gave the Wildcats one more opportunity to tie or take the lead. The Wildcats swung the ball around the perimeter to their point guard, Mike Rosaroso, for a wide-open three-point basket that he nailed at the buzzer, securing the victory for the Wildcats. The final score was 82-48 The 34 point margin over the Seawolves was the largest victory for the Coyotes in their 43 game history and marked the twentieth win for the Coyotes this season. Senior Jordan Burris lead the team in points with 15. And later added three steals and two blocks. Senior Lacy Haddock produced 13 points for the team and received help from senior Kirby Gardner who finished with 10 points, five assists, and two steals for the Coyotes. The newly seventh ranked Coyote’s men’s basketball team hosted the 23rd ranked Broncos.The game was played in front of a record-setting crowd of about 4,500 people in the Coussoulis Arena as part of the Pack the House night. The Pack the House night is an event that takes place every year to fill the arena to capacity. This year, the crowd brought a lot of energy and excitement to the game. This special week is scheduled with many events where students can come together for a fun time and to relieve some stress. The schedule of events starts off with a pre-homecoming celebration at the basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 1. CSUSB will play Cal Poly Pomona in the Coussoulis Arena. One of the games was an overtime thriller that led the Coyotes to victory. The Coyotes played against the Gators of CSU San Francisco on Feb. 28 and the Seawolves of Sonoma State University to end the regular season. In the first game against CSU San Francisco, the Coyotes got off to a great start and never looked back, beating the Gators 89-58. The Coyotes played the Wildcats of CSU Chico and the Warriors of CSU Stanislaus. The team traveled to CSU Chico to play the Wildcats in the first of two road games. In the first half, the Coyotes started off strong, keeping the game close but toward the end of the half, the Wildcats began to pull away. By Kristopher Sarikas |Staff Writer| Brian Goins, a 23-year-old junior guard for the men’s basketball team here at CSUSB has been playing basketball for the past 17 years. Growing up in the bay area Goins explained how basketball has always been a part of his life. “I have been playing basketball since I was six years old,” said Goins. “I always used to play at the park with my brothers.” In a 2011 interview with Kevin McCarthy from NorCalPreps.com, Goins shared his past hardships and obstacles he has had to overcome.
