Feelings alone do not make a change in the world claimed Dr. Hatem Bazian at the lecture on campus. Lowell Bergman’s fight against the distorted truth
In recent years, public trust on government officials as well as business, media and NGOs institutions in the United States has steadily declined, according to the Edelman Trust Barometer. The Department of Public Administration at CSUSB conducted "The Abdication of Truth and the Decline of Public Trust" forum at the Santos Manuel Student Union Theater with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Lowell Bergman as a guest speaker. The discussion focused on why the public has grown tolerant to accepting false statements from government officials which has increased the distrust the public has on the government. Bergman has been recognized for exposing the truth to the public in many of … [Read more...] about Lowell Bergman’s fight against the distorted truth

Opinion: Homeless People are More than Just a Number
By Saeed Villanueva |Staff Writer| Within the media, we have seen talks about the homeless population being a problem in Los Angeles and San Bernardino County. This usually comes in forms of language, because the homeless are referred to as a problem or as a number rather than a person. I admit I have been guilty of this in the past of seeing someone homeless and disregarding them without acknowledging that these are real people. These people have names, families and come from different places. The media on the other hand generally portrays the homeless as a burden to society and puts the blame on them for being the problem rather than focusing on them as individuals. It is … [Read more...] about Opinion: Homeless People are More than Just a Number
Podcasts great for passing time
By Rebekah Deponte |Staff Writer| Podcasts are a great way to relieve the boredom of traveling or just the commute to and from campus. Podcast are similar to radio shows but are made available via internet to download onto computers and mobile devices that cover topics from politics and history to comedy and music. Several podcasts look at music, introducing listeners to new artists and exposing them to genres they would not normally think to listen to. One of these music podcasts is "All Songs Considered," which focuses on new music from emerging artists, as well as icons in the industry. "[I like this podcast because] they show a wide array of music and I think it's … [Read more...] about Podcasts great for passing time
Pursuing an education is valuable
By Steffanie Martinez |Staff Writer| A college diploma seems useless when all you need is one viral video to earn you millions of dollars, right? Not so much. Media influences our lives now more than ever, whether we choose to accept it or not. It has introduced us to a world where being successful doesn’t always begin or finish with a college education. The term “internet celebrity” denotes any YouTube, Vine, and Instagram star who makes a living out of posting content on social networks—jobs that require no sort of diploma. They make it seem simple, when the reality is that fame is not easily accessible to anyone who has a social media account. People like Steve Jobs, … [Read more...] about Pursuing an education is valuable
Ignorance is a bliss, in terms of violence
By Nicholas Whitt |Staff Writer| Violence has always been a serious affliction of humanity. And now the media exploits the incidents of violence, which makes us hypersensitive to such situations. Media may incite people to behave a certain way but in terms of causing violent behaviors, that is our own doing. "If they [media] were a major cause of problems in society we'd know by now. But the evidence just isn't there," said Christopher Ferguson of Stetson University in an interview with CBS News. The media does not have control on humanity's reaction nor does it affect whether individuals will be influenced by them. Instead, it highlights violence happening around us, … [Read more...] about Ignorance is a bliss, in terms of violence
Fashion over function
Carolyn Solar |Staff Writer| Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has been critiqued on her fashion choices for as long as she has been in the public eye. Whether it is her androgynous style, her use of hair scrunchies, and the occasional natural makeup, Hillary Clinton is notably criticized more often for her style than any of her male front-runners. In the run to become the next president the media wants not only a woman who is educated and passionate, but they must be a style icon, too. It seems that regardless of what she wears, she is criticized. In this campaign, she is teased for wearing pantsuits and chunky jewelry rather than something more subtle. Clinton has … [Read more...] about Fashion over function
Media bias clouds presidential election
By Serena Gomez |Staff Writer| Media coverage of the 2016 presidential election has created an ideal model of who I do not want as president. Bernie Sanders, Ted Cruz, Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump are all significant to the election, but for some reason we hear more about Trump’s horrific words and actions than any other candidate. According to CNN, Sanders said, “you explain to me how a major network on the evening news has 81 minutes of Trump, 20 seconds of Bernie Sanders. Does that make sense to anybody?” The media is biased and creates negative images of certain political candidates, but Trump is using every second of it to his advantage. “FDR was the first ‘radio’ … [Read more...] about Media bias clouds presidential election
Black women suffer media degradation
By Cherae Hunt |Asst. News Editor| It disappoints me as a black woman to see myself portrayed in such a negative light in the media. Black women are seen as either sexual objects or perceived as "ghetto," even though there are plenty of women in power positions that don’t get recognized or represented. All students interviewed are black. "We want to give the appearance that we are living the good life because most songs out today say that if you aren’t drinking alcohol heavily, going to the club every weekend and sleeping with some stranger by the end of the night then your life is boring,” said student Destiny Hunter. All over television and rap music videos black women are … [Read more...] about Black women suffer media degradation
