Monterey Park Shooting and the Bravery of a Local Hero

February 9, 2023 by Celeste Santarrosa Leave a Comment

On Jan. 21, before the celebration of the Lunar New Year, Monterey Park resulted in a tragedy when a man opened fire killing ten people and critically injuring eleven others inside the Star Ballroom Dance Studio. The dance studio was known as a sanctuary for many older Asian Americans and immigrants to come together in the form of dance. Star Ballroom Dance Studio has provided many newcomers and regulars with a sense of a tight-knit community and is a staple to the city of Monterey Park. At 10:22 p.m. gunfire was reported at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio where Monterey Park Police responded within three minutes of the first 9-1-1 call.  “Chaos had erupted and ‘extensive … [Read more...] about Monterey Park Shooting and the Bravery of a Local Hero

Guide to Vegan-brunch

May 1, 2019 by marlyn ramirez 12 Comments

I have noticed some automatically assume vegan food is a plate of vegetables and are afraid to try it. When in reality you might have a meal at a restaurant and not realize it's entirely plant-based. It's that good. "What do you eat if you're vegan?" Most asked question ever. I have made looking for the best vegan brunch locations my newest hobby. This is a guide to some trendy locations around Los Angeles. I am starting off the list with CATCH, Los Angeles. Catch is a rooftop bar/restaurant.  Stated in their website, "CATCH LA keeps it fresh, incorporating local and sustainable ingredients wherever possible as it cultivates a menu mix of Catch classics like the Catch Roll, … [Read more...] about Guide to Vegan-brunch

By Manny Sandoval |Distribution Manager| A Deputy Coroner is a crucial career within law enforcement. From conducting investigations to determining the cause and mode of death, contacting descendants of the deceased, to helping families go about making the tough transition during such a trying time, Deputy Coroners wear many hats and put themselves on the line when in the field. A Deputy Coroner is someone who investigates death. We had the opportunity to sit down with the County of San Bernardino Deputy Coroner Marlene Leyva to discuss how one can become a Deputy Coroner. We covered her journey to success, and discussed the critical aspects that come along with this gut … [Read more...] about Investigating dead bodies

How Often Should Men Get Haircuts In The Winter?

March 13, 2017 by Manuel Sandoval 154 Comments

By: Manny Sandoval | Contributing Writer The amount of time men should go between haircuts depends on the length of the cut and style. A good haircut should last a long time. But the definition of ‘a long time’ and ‘a good haircut’ seem to differ from person to person. In the winter men are much more prone to letting their hair grow out and cut their hair less often due to the colder temperatures. One might feel that a haircut every three to four weeks is too far in-between and some men may feel that is an adequate amount of time. Heres what Instagram users had to say about mens hair: https://instagram.com/p/BP_myoDFUwo/ For those who continuously keep the sides of their … [Read more...] about How Often Should Men Get Haircuts In The Winter?

Women belong in the Resistance

January 26, 2017 by Brittanie Gutierrez 622 Comments

By Brittanie Gutierrez |Staff Writer| I have always been passionate about women's rights; I've always wanted to let people know that my rights were not for negotiation. I never imagined marching next to others with the same emotions, fears and hopes. So when Women's March Los Angeles was formulating, I knew I wanted to take part of it. Being a woman devastated and afraid of the future of my rights, I deemed it vital that I went to this march; it was not an option—I had to go. The morning of the march, I knew nothing but good things were going to happen. After the first stop on the Metrolink, I knew this movement was going to be big; the train had reached maximum capacity … [Read more...] about Women belong in the Resistance

RuPaul’s Drag Convention

May 16, 2016 by Archived posts 9 Comments

By Natalie Padron |Staff Writer| This past weekend marked the second annual RuPaul’s Drag Convention and let’s just say, it was inspirational. The west hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center was crawling with glamorous amazons with the hopes of meeting their favorite drag queens and iconic members of the LGBTQIA community. The venue was covered in vendors of vintage clothing, lace front wigs, nail salons and even plush toys. The back half was taken up by both past and present drag queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race. RuPaul’s costume exhibit and dressed up wax figure was a real crowd-pleaser; and right behind it all was a curtained off room where you could go get your picture … [Read more...] about RuPaul’s Drag Convention
