Old VHS curse goes viral

February 13, 2017 by Robert Klimper 5 Comments

By Robert Klimper |Student Writer| Moviegoers will once again fear the ring of a phone with the third new movie "Rings", now playing in theaters. The newest addition to "The Ring" series of movies, despite being apart of the franchise one does not need to worry about seeing the previous films to understand the premise. "Rings" does have aspects of the story from the previous two movies, but explains it well enough for new audience. According to the storyline, after one watches a cursed VHS tape, they have seven days left to live until the ghost girl Samara comes and takes their life. The only way to avoid the fate of the seven day time limit is to make a copy of the film and … [Read more...] about Old VHS curse goes viral

Undead return to terrorize

January 26, 2017 by Robert Klimper 5 Comments

By Robert Kilmper |Staff Writer| Sleepless nights are in store for gamers as the series that created the survival horror genre, "Resident Evil," returns to its roots. "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" will be the newest addition to the series which last year celebrated its 20th year anniversary. The game was announced at the 2016 Electronic Entertainment Expo and was meet with a mixed acclaimed from fans of the series. Some praise the game which looked to be a return to the creepy and unsettling atmosphere of the original games, with others condemning the change of perspective for the game to first person from the traditional third person the series is known for. For a time fans … [Read more...] about Undead return to terrorize

“Unfriended” is not your typical horror film

April 25, 2015 by Archived posts 34 Comments

By Jose Alvarez | Staff Writer | “Unfriended” is a low budget film that has been making a lot of noise around CSUSB lately. The movie was released on April 17 with what seemed to be low expectations from everyone.   If you ask me, the movie was pretty decent. What’s unique about the film is that we, the audience, view it as if it were a Skype call.   The screenwriter, Nelson Greaves, used an unknown spirit that invades the Skype transmission. The plot goes as follows: Laura Barns was a victim of cyber-bullying after a video was posted online of her passed out at a party.   After the embarrassing video was uploaded on YouTube, another video was posted of … [Read more...] about “Unfriended” is not your typical horror film

Bringing back the dead – “The Lazarus Effect” movie review

March 7, 2015 by Archived posts 192 Comments

By Alejandro Cardenas |Staff Writer| “The Lazarus Effect” looked promising but failed to bring life back to Hollywood’s dull but profitable mainstream horror genre. On my way to see “The Lazarus Effect,” expectations weren’t too high. Horror movies have been disappointing lately and after watching the trailers, I expected a generic modern day recreation of the classic Frankenstein story line. What managed to get my attention was the cast members. “The Lazarus Effect” brought the striking Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass for the leading roles, along with the multi-talented, Donald Glover, also known as rapper Childish Gambino. So far, “The Lazarus Effect”’s $3.3 million budget has … [Read more...] about Bringing back the dead – “The Lazarus Effect” movie review

Ouija movie keeps it cheesy

October 31, 2014 by Archived posts 54 Comments

By Chelsea Faler |Staff Writer| The new horror film “Oija,” released on Oct. 24, consisted mostly of scary moments already seen in the trailer or were just cheesy and typical. I had very high expectations for this film and was ready to be shivering from fear but I found myself giggling instead at some of the “scary” scenes. For instance, most of the occurrences that made you jump were things like doors closing by themselves, ghosts appearing out of thin air, and general loud creepy sounds. To clarify, this was not a terrible production and I most definitely have seen more poorly made scary movies but I still felt somewhat of a letdown. The storyline is decent, based around the … [Read more...] about Ouija movie keeps it cheesy

“Annabelle,” not for kids

October 11, 2014 by Archived posts 1 Comment

By Chelsea Faler |Staff Writer| “Anabelle,” the highly anticipated spin-off of “The Conjuring,” keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat for the entire film. John R. Leonetti, the director of “Annabelle,”is also known for his work on other horror films such as “The Conjuring” (2013) and “Insidious” (2010). As someone who thoroughly enjoys this genre of film, I found this production to be one of the best horror films that has hit the big screen in quite some time. Leonetti continues to display wonderful work as he utilizes everything from suspenseful music, creepy props, and camera angles to keep your heart racing. The frightening film is allegedly based on a true story, and centers … [Read more...] about “Annabelle,” not for kids

“Transcendence” Future Immortality

April 26, 2014 by Archived posts 46 Comments

By Taylor Vermillion |Staff Writer| “Transcendence” is a film that shows the unbelievable advances that tech-scientists Will Castor (Johnny Depp), and his wife, Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) have achieved, including the technological uploading of human consciousness into a network-connected hard drive. “Transcendence” made its box office debut on April 10 and brought in $10.9 million during its release. The earnings show that the film shouldn't be considered a box office smash. Past films have addressed the powerful nature of computers, and whether or not their intelligence will someday surpass our own. “Transcendence” presents a new element that leaves the audience questioning whether … [Read more...] about “Transcendence” Future Immortality

Perspective is key to survival

April 18, 2014 by Archived posts 3 Comments

By Diana Ramos |Asst A&E Editor| “Oculus” ranked No. 3 in the box office behind, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Rio 2” raking in $12 million during its opening weekend. Jason Blum, the leading producer of the horror film has also produced “Insidious” and “Paranormal Activity.” He did not fail to bring another nail biting horror film to theaters. This somewhat gory film keeps you on the edge of your seat with some intense scenes. You can’t seem to look away even when you are watching the movie while hiding behind your hands. There is a particular scene where Kaylie (Karen Gillan) is eating a bright red apple while changing light bulbs. She places the apple … [Read more...] about Perspective is key to survival

Outlast review: Prepare to be petrified

March 11, 2014 by Archived posts 10 Comments

By Phil Ruddle |News Editor| I've disconnected myself from the real world, turned off the lights, and raised the TV volume. I'm petrified. Yet, I can't look away while being on the edge of my seat and barely able to hold the controller. "Outlast" is terrifying and one of the most original survival horror games in years, I definitely give it a four out of five rating. This game provides a different spin as there aren't any weapon upgrades, items, skill set attributes or even the ability to fight back. Your only options are to run, hide, or die. There are pacing drawbacks, the second half is not as good as the first, and some might not like the system of not being able to … [Read more...] about Outlast review: Prepare to be petrified

Keeping it spooky with Halloween movies

October 26, 2013 by Archived posts 158 Comments

By Mary Moreno |Staff Writer| Halloween is right around the corner and CSUSB students are busting out the popcorn and watching their favorite horror flicks. From black and white classics to modern day slashers no horror is left unturned. “Freddy draws on the fear of his victims. He finds what makes them tick and uses it against them,” said Communications student Donald Nunez Nunez, enjoys cult horror films like Wes Craven’s, “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” “The Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise has nine film installations revolving around the vengeful spirit Freddy Krueger who attacks his victims in their sleep. Jackie Martinez is a fan of everything Alfred Hitchcock. “Psycho” is set in … [Read more...] about Keeping it spooky with Halloween movies
