When California Governor Gavin Newsom issued statewide restrictions on going outside, the only services permitted to continue had to be deemed essential such as those related to food, prescriptions, healthcare, and commuting to essential jobs. Access to food is a concern many people have in this period of pandemic. Nonessential services such as gyms, restaurants, and bars are being shut down. But it's more common than we think. According to the California Association of Food Banks, one out of eight Californians suffer from food insecurity, that's 5.4 million people that do not know where or when they will be getting their next meal. Assembly Bill 453 (AB-453) was presented to CA Legislature to fight student hunger among California State Universities by requiring campuses to implement a meal plan donation program on April 25. Emily Anne Espinosa | Staff Writer | CSUSB won $2,500 as a first place prize from The National Peanut Board’s Snack Attack Competition, which will go toward The Den food pantry.The Office of Community Engagement (OCE) at CSUSB competed with 24 other universities with campus food pantries in The National Peanut Board’s Snack Attack competition, where positive messages about peanuts as a healthy snack were to be promoted through social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram.
