By Dahyun Lee, Jimin Jang, & Natalie Martinez 21-year-old CSUSB exchange student Lee Eun-seo worries about her experience so far in a new school. "I think I feel lonely living alone in another country. Before I came to the exchange student program, I thought I could make a lot of friends, but I'm having a hard time making friends. Communication differences
By Yena Hong |Staff Writer| Communication is one of the biggest problems that many Korean students currently face here at CSUSB. Through verbal and nonverbal communication, Korean students find it difficult to adjust to the American culture, and may experience culture shock. One Korean student, Sohyeon Hong, says that the biggest part of culture shock is verbal communication. She explained that she gets confused with slang language in American culture. "One of my group members said 'I am down' in the class discussion," said Hong. "I've never heard this expression before, so I guessed she didn't agree with my opinion [...] Because 'down' sounds negative for me, but it means … [Read more...] about Communication differences
James Brown — Professor Profile
By Emmanuel Gutierrez |Features Editor| Critically acclaimed author of "Los Angeles Diaries: A Memoir", screenwriter, and mentor James Brown is a beloved English professor at CSUSB. One day, a student called, gushing over her favorite professor's literary accomplishments, the disheartening details of his youth, the awe-inspiring road of self-betterment he walks today, and the humble, generous man she appreciates every day when she walks into class. Brown's considering retirement soon, and in effort to hopefully persuade him to stay longer so she may enroll in his master's program, she requested an exposé on the man. Suffice to say, the Coyote Chronicle immediately folded at the … [Read more...] about James Brown — Professor Profile

Rae Morris figures herself out
By Ivanna Carlos |Staff Writer| Rachel Anne Morris, better known by her stage name Rae Morris, 21, released her debut album Unguarded on Jan. 26. Unguarded, which was released in stores and on iTunes, has a total of 12 songs which includes Morris’ hit single, “Unguarded.” When listening to the single “Unguarded,” which is personally my favorite song from the album, I felt as if I was listening to Ellie Goulding, a pop artist from England. Not only does Morris sound similar to Goulding, but she also compares to Coldplay, and Lana Del Rey giving off a pop-like vibe at times but also toning it down and having a resemblance to Birdy. The song that reminded me of Birdy is Morris’ … [Read more...] about Rae Morris figures herself out

Make Puerto Rico the 51st state already, jeez
By Angelice Romero |Staff Writer| It has been 61 years since Puerto Rico became a commonwealth of the United States, so why is it still not a state when it obviously should be? The answer is politics. Being Puerto Rican-American, I see firsthand the struggles Puerto Rico is going through and how becoming a state would benefit us. The education system in Puerto Rico is terrible and lacks major funding. According to The New York Times, riots started because of a 50 percent tuition increase of $800. This not only shows the struggles of the University of Puerto Rico campuses but it also represents the struggle of Puerto Rico and it’s people. The 2010 and 2012 census in Puerto Rico shows … [Read more...] about Make Puerto Rico the 51st state already, jeez
International student reflects on his time at CSUSB
By Jounghun Kim |Staff Writer| I came to CSUSB from Seoul, South Korea. on Jan. 8, 2012. It was my first day in the United States and I have been attending classes here as an international student for about a year. While I have been living here, I experienced that the U.S. has so many more different cultures than Korea. I can point out several other things that are different. First, I must throw away my trash all at once in America. In Korea, we have to separate the garbage, cans, bottles, papers etc. into separate bins. However, the most wonderful thing that I miss is the food crusher. It is so convenient to use. Here you have the “to go box.” In Korea, people usually do not … [Read more...] about International student reflects on his time at CSUSB
